6 · 70년대에 본격적인 궤도에 진입한 한국의 산업화는 사람들에게 불확실한 세계에서 살아가고 있다는 거대한 불안감을 불어넣는다. 이에 그 당시의 한국소설은 다양한 형태로 산업 사회적 부조리에 대응하는 미학적 전략들을 고안한다. 서정인의 경우는 그러한 부조리에 저항하기 위해 서술의 차원에서 자의적 견해를 축소함으로써 모순과 불합리에 대항하는 객관적 사실성의 서술 방식을 주된 전략으로 삼는다. 「뒷개」는 바로 그러한 전략을 첨예하게 구현한 대표적인 소설인데, 여기서 서정인의 독자는 사실의 서술로부터 오는 이방인 의식을 통해서 처음부터 그 영역의 속성이 아닌 중립적인 객관성을 그 영역 안으로 끌어들이고 사실상 보다 적극적인 관심과 탐색의 충동을 보여준다. 즉 소설을 읽는 독자는 마치 탐정과 같은 정체성을 갖게 된다. 이와 함께 「뒷개」라는 소설은 일종의 수수께끼와 같은 서사가 되는데, 결국 서정인의 독자는 해답을 감춘 그 비밀스러운 서사의 주제적 중심부에 도달한다. 말하자면 객관적 사실들 사이의 인과관계에 대한 합리적 추론을 진행해가는 그 독자가 마침내 탐정으로서의 임무를 완수하는 순간, 수수께끼의 해답은 바로 산업 사회적 부조리 그 자체로 드러난다. 그러나 독자는 중심부에 대한 해답을 얻는 바로 그 순간 실존적 부조리로 그 중심부의 위치가 변경되는 불확실성에 직면하게 되는데, 여기서 마침내 「뒷개」는 해답으로서의 부조리를 넘어 이 부조리에 대한 해결책으로서의 탐색의 충동을 강조하는 기묘한 형태의 수수께끼의 서사가 된다.

The industrialization of Korean society, which had entered to authentic tracks in 1960 · 70`s, inspires enormously its people to a feeling of anxiety that is living in the uncertain world. At that time, Korean novels devise aesthetic strategies in various forms, which deal with absurdity of a industrial society. Specially Seo, Jeong-in, a writer in 6 · 70`s, strategically commune with the narration method of objective reality that decreases contradiction and irrationality by way of curtailment of an arbitrary opinion from dimension of narration in order to resist such absurdity. Above all, 「A Local Harbor」 is a representative novel that embodies such strategy sharply. In that novel, Seo, Jeong-in`s readers draw the neutral objectivity-this was not attribute its territory in the beginning-inside its territory by means of a stranger`s consciousness that comes from narration of fact. In fact, they also show an active interest and impulse of search about that novel by such means. That is, they has the identity as a detective. And in addition Seo, Jeong-in`s 「A Local Harbor」 becomes a narrative such as a kind of riddle. After all Seo, Jeong-in`s readers reach the secret thematic heart of the narrative that hides its answer. In other word, when such readers, who proceed with a rational reasoning about a causal relationship between objective facts, accomplish their task as a detective finally, the answer of the riddle is social absurdity of industrialism. But as soon as readers get answers about the central, they face a moment of uncertainty that its location is changed from the social absurdity to the existential absurdity, you will have to face beyond the absurdity of the answer. And finally 「A Local Harbor」 becomes an enigmatic narrative with bizarre form that emphasize impulse of search as a solution for absurdity above absurdity as a solution.
