『창작과비평』 및 『문학과지성』 은 4 · 19 세대의 중요한 문학적 성취로 간주될 수 있으며, 자유에 대한 강렬한 지향의식은 이들을 묶어주는 공통적 특질이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 『창작과비평』 진영이 추구한 자유가 압제적인 사회적 현실로부터의 해방을 의미하는 해방적 자유였다면, 김현에게 자유는 보다 근본적인 의미에서의 자유, 일체의 큰타자로부터의 벗어남을 지향하는 절대적 자유를 의미했다. 김현은 특히 새것 콤플렉스나 영웅적 자기희생과 같은 정신적 샤머니즘이 본질적으로 거짓된 것이며, 객관적 사실, 역사적 필연성 혹은 첨단의 이론이라는 보호막 뒤에 숨어 자신의 주장과 행동이 갖는 책임을 떠넘기는 행위라고 봤다. 그것은 그 주장이 명시적으로 올바를지라도, 스스로의 주장과 선택에 따르는 결과를 책임지지 않으려는 태도에 토대하는 것이기 때문에 궁극적으로는 비겁한 행위에 불과한 것이다. 요컨대 김현의 논리에 따르면 자유와 진실에는 의심의 여지가 없는 기준 따윈 존재하지 않는다. 진실의 토대를 이루는 것은 고통과 용기의 경험이며, 자유로운 선택이란 일종의 실존적 고독 속에서 아무런 외부적 보증도 없는 진실을 경험하는 것이다. 따라서 진실을 주장하는 것은 일종의 도박이자 모험을 건 결단이다. 어떤 외부적 보증도 받을 수 없음에도 불구하고, 자신이 진실이라 경험한 것을 따르고자 하는 선택, 이러한 선택과 주장과 행위야말로 김현이 말하는 윤리적 행위이며, 소설비평을 통해 확인하고자 하는 자기-관여적 진실인 것이다.

This thesis is to understand the meaning of freedom and truth in Kim Hyun`s criticism. According to Kim Hyun, literature is useless, so it gives us a chance to think of suppression. Literary useless should be treated as useful because it gives a chance to think of suppression. What changes in literature is the entire constellation of emergence and loss. In other words, a true modern historical break does not simply designate the regressive loss of something, but the shift in the very grid which enables us to measure losses and gains. So we can say that Kim Hyun`s view point about literature is more radical than other critics view point. In spite of doxa that critics who were searching for the literary possibility to defy the developmental dictatorship are more radical in general. In his opinion, the negative dimension in literature is far more decisive than its positive outcome or motivation. What really counted is simply the fact that a writer said “No!” to symbolic hegemony. The positive reasons in the name of which this break is accomplished are probably not clear to its bearers. According to Kim Hyun, literature is an act of pure risk, of refusal. Kim Hyun said that dream on society without repression can function as criticism of negativity of existing society.
