In this paper, the characteristic traits of the protagonist Botchan and their meanings shown in the novel text Botchan written by Natsume Soseki have been analyzed and examined by using the viewpoint of the theory of Enneagram character types. Enneagram is a theory of character types made by combining the wisom and insight of human analyses concerning personality that have been handed down from the ancient times with the theories of psychology. In this paper, the textual value of the novel Botchan could be confirmed from the standpoint that the character of the protagonist Botchan is basically Character Type 8 which is `lust`-energy-oriented and that the novel is about the meaning of `a righteous battle` that is developed by that kind of characteristic traits and acts, through the diverse concepts(instinctual energy center, basic fear, basic desire, defense mechanism, self-consciousness, behavior pattern, integration-oriented, etc) which are used in Enneagram theory of character types. It can be said that we can discover important clues to the reasons why the novel is read by many Japanese and Korean readers as a steady seller, as well as the various fun and the meaning of the novel in the characteristics of the protagonist Botchan`s personality and its development process, which is revealed through the key word `battle`. It can be said that the major outcome of this paper is to more clearly understand the characteristic traits of the protagonist Botchan and the basic meaning of that behavior objectively through the theories of the Enneagram character types, and furthermore, to confirm a new possibility of interpreting the novel text by using the diverse viewpoints of psychological theories.
