타쿠보쿠의 초기시에 대한 평가는 모방적 낭만시라는 부정적 평가를 받고 있다. 이러한 평가는 타당한 일견 타당한 평가라고 생각된다. 그러나 타쿠보쿠의 초기 중에는 모방적 낭만시라고 간단히 단정할 수 없는 시가 있다. 「잠에든 도시」와 「도쿄」라는 시이다. 흥미로운 점은 이 2편의 시는 제목과 제작 시기는 다르지만 그 내용이나 시의 분위기가 매우 흡사하다는 것이다. 즉, 타쿠보쿠에게 있어 도쿄는 꿈을 실현해 주는 희망의 무대가 아니라, 사람을 숨막히게하고 불안과 초조에 지쳐 죽음을 생각하게 할 정도의 부정적인 장소로서 인식되고 있는 것이다. 메이지 시대의 문학자 중에서 근대도시 도쿄를 이 정도로 부정적으로 그린 시인은 없을 것이다. 이 점이 타쿠보쿠의 초기시의 하나의 특징이다. 타쿠보쿠의 초기시의 또 하나의 특징은 러일전쟁에 관심을 갖고 그에 대한 소회를 읊고 있다는 것이다.　타쿠보쿠는 「시베리아의 시」에서 황량한 「시베리아」에 가서 진정한 미와 나라의 이상을 펼치자고 하는 내셔널리즘을 읊고 있다. 또 한편으로는 「마카로프 제독 추모의 시」에서는 「글로벌한」「휴머니즘」을 욾고 있다. 즉, 러일전쟁 시기의 타쿠보쿠의 시는 내셔널리즘과 그 내셔널리즘과는 함께할 수 없는 글로벌한 휴머니즘이 공존하고 있다는 것에 초기시의 특징이 있다고 할 수 있다. 타쿠보쿠의 초기시 중에서 「잠에든 도시」와「도쿄」「마카로프 제독 추모의 시」는 단지 3편으로 그 수는 적지만 타쿠보쿠의 시를 재평가하고 새로운 의미를 부여하는 하나의 단서가 될 수 있을 것이다.

Takuboku`s early poetry is negatively viewed as imitational romantic poetry. This view carries validity to some degree. Yet some of his early poems cannot be simply classified as imitational romantic poems: “The Capital Asleep” and “Tokyo.” Interestingly enough, these two poems are similar to each other in poetic content and mood despite the dissimilarity in titles and years of composition. That is, to Takuboku, Tokyo is not a place where dreams come true but a negative place where its residents choke up and think of death out of uncertainty and anxiety. There are few poets of the Meiji era who portrayed Tokyo in such negative terms. This is one of the characteristics of Takuboku`s early poetry. Another characteristic of Takuboku`s early poetry is linked to his interest in the Russo-Japanese War. In “A Poem in Siberia,” the poet ponders upon nationalism in relation to genuine beauty and the ideals of a nation in association with the barren land of Siberia. In addition, he elaborates on global humanism in “A Pome in Memory of Admiral Makarov.” In this sense, the seemingly contradictory juxtaposition of nationalism and global humanism is characteristic of Takuboku`s early poetry. The aforementioned three poems-“The Capital Asleep,” “Tokyo,” and “A Poem in Memory of Admiral Makarov”-may not represent the entire early poetry of Takuboku but can serve as means to reevaluate his poetry with a new meaning.
