본 논문에서는 몽골과 한국의 구비문학과 민속 가운데 쥐가 어떤 상징성을 갖고 있으며, 두 나라 민족의 쥐에 대한 인식이 어떠한가를 살펴보았다. 쥐는 12해의 첫 번째 동물로 두 나라 모두 `처음, 시작, 선두`의 상징적 의미를 가지고 있으며, 부와 번성을 상징하는 대표적인 동물이다. 몽골에서는 `주둥이가 흰 쥐`는 다양한 상징성을 가지고 나타나며, 주로 시작, 풍요를 상징하며 선한 영적 존재로 형상화된다. 한국의 경우 쥐는 자연변화에 대한 예민한 감각을 가지고 있어 영물로 여겨지며, 농사와 관련하여 쥐에 대한 풍속이 있어 왔다. 한국에서 생쥐는 인간에게 물과 불의 근본을 알려주는 시원과 관련된 동물로 나타나며, 또 인간의 혼으로 관념되기도 했다. 쥐가 재물과 부를 가져다준다는 인식은 두 나라 모두 쥐의 생태적 특징을 길하고 좋은 쪽으로 해석하는 태도를 드러내준다. 쥐는 매우 영악하고 꾀가 많은 동물로 강자를 이기는 민중의 상징적 존재가 되기도 하지만, 이러한 영악성은 인간으로 둔갑하는 설화적 모티브를 낳기도 했다. 이때 주로 남성으로 둔갑하는데 이것은 쥐가 양기(陽氣) 동물이기 때문으로 생각된다. 쥐는 수탈자의 부정적 이미지보다는 긍정적 이미지가 좀더 강한데 이는 두 나라 모두 쥐를 실제적인 존재보다는 상징적 존재로 보는 시각을 드러내주는 것이라 할 수 있다.

This research paper presents a study of the “rat symbol” on the oral literature and folk customs of Mongolia and Korea. The rat is the first animal of the 12 year`s animals and it symbolizes the initiator, the beginning, the head, and is increasingly becoming a symbol of prosperity. In Mongolia, a “rat with white mouth” symbolizes many things, including origin, plentifulness and it represents a good, godlike animal. In Korea, a rat is known as an animal that has very keen sence on their natural environments. There has also been a traditional belief about the mouse as related to farming. A rat in the home is considered to possess the spirit of a person and teaches people the origin of fire and water. There is a belief in Korea and Mongolia which says that a rat brings prosperities and therefore there are positive sentiments towards the mouse. However, as a mouse is a vivacious animal, it also symbolizes a animal who is able to overcome more powerful existence. This belief has also created a legend in which a rat transforms into a person. In the legend, the mouse often transforms into a man because a rat is considered to be an animal with male characteristics. It shows that a rat has better images instead of bad images to cause damage; it is considered to have more symbolic meanings than in actuality.
