이해조의 신소설이 이룬 성취와 한계에 대해서는 많은 연구 업적이 축적되어 있다. 그러나 그의 신소설에 대한 소설미학적 접근은 의외로 미흡한 실정이다. 그의 신소설 중 「구마검」, 「산천초목」, 「화의혈」은 근대 리얼리즘 소설에 근접한 성취를 이룬 탁월한 작품들이다. 이들은 당대의 이인직을 능가하는 소설미학적 성취를 보여주고 있다. 이에 따라 이 글은 위 세 작품을 텍스트로 하여 소설미학적 측면의 성취를 정밀히 분석하였다. 우선, 세 작품은 구성과 인물 묘사 및 설정 등의 측면에서 매우 뛰어나다. 우선 구성에 있어서 그의 작품은 여타의 개화기 소설들과는 달리 소설 첫머리의 복선을 효과적으로 활용하고 있다. 또한 인물은 사건의 전개에 어울리게 논리적으로 등·퇴장하고 있으며 성격은 그럴만한 인물이기에 그럴만한 사건을 만들고 또 그에 어울리는 논리성을 구비하고 있어 개연성을 부여해준다. 마지막으로 세 작품은 사건 전개에 있어 인과성에 의지하여 논리적으로 작품을 전개시킨다. 신소설이 흔히 남발하는 우연성이 배제된 사건전개는 당대에 그의 맞수였던 이인직도 이루지 못한 탁월한 덕목이다. 그의 이러한 성취는 「자유종」에서 살필 수 있는 그의 합리적이고 객관적인 사고, 1910년대에 신소설 작가 중 유일하게 나름의 소설관을 피력할 수 있었던 장인적 안목, 문학에 일관되게 투신한 그의 예인적 자질로부터 비롯한 것이다. 그러나 그의 성취가 이 세 편에 머물 수밖에 없었던 것은 일제 강점에 따른 역사 의식의 약화, 당시의 상업주의적 출판 환경 등 기존에 밝혀진 시대적 여건과 함께 그가 왕족 출신이라는 신분적 한계를 벗어나지 못하고 유교라는 전래의 가치에 함몰된 태생적 한계에 기인하는 것임을 이 글은 최종적으로 밝혔다.

Shinsoseol writer Lee Hae-Jo, his literary achievements and limitations have been studied so many times still now. But we find precise aesthetic researches on his works are very rare than we expected. Actually, He had left prominent three Shinsoseol works - 『The sword breaking down superstitions』, 『The mountains and streams, plants and grasses』, 『The blood of flower』- which had been closed to modern realistic achievement. These works are superior to works of his age`s shinsoseol writer Lee In-Jik. Accordingly, this thesis will analyze his exellences in aspect of novel aesthetics precisely. Above all, these three works had gotten exellencies in aspect of plot and character. These works shows underplots which other Shinsoseol didn`t get in those days. And also these works shows causal relationships in developing of affairs. Characters appear and disappear logically according to causal relationships. Characters make story appropriate to their characters. These elements gives very high probability to works. His achievement like these originate from objective and rational thoughts which had been shown in 『The bell of liberty』, talent of sepecialist that could state his own opinion on novel, and of artist which had engaged in literary writing till his death continuously. But his achievements is limited to above three works. It is said that his lilmits was due to commercial publication backgrounds, and his accomodating popular tastes. I think one more reason worked to his limits. That is to say, He was a birth of royal line and also strong confucianist. According to this, his traditional vision obstructed his more developed achievements in modern realim.
