아버지의 월북과 그로 인한 가족의 비극을 다루고 있는 『영웅시대』는 이문열 문학을 출발시킨 모태이다. 이념으로 인한 비극의 시대 80년대를 한 가족을 통해서 재구성해내고 있는 『영웅시대』에서 가족과 가족주의는 중요한 문제틀이 되고 있다. 이러한 중요성에도 불구하고 『영웅시대』에 관한 기존의 연구들이 가족주의에 집중하고 있는 모습은 찾아 보기 어렵다. 기존의 연구들은 주로 작가 이문열의 전망 부재, 역사적 허무주의, 이데올로기 혐오증 등 관념편향성으로 수렴되는 경향을 보이는데, 이는 이러한 양상이 가족주의 내부의 문제로부터 나오고 있는 것은 간과하고 있기 때문이다. 본고는 이러한 문제점을 인식하여 이문열의 『영웅시대』를 가족주의적 관점에서 연구하고자 하였다. 한국사회에서 가족은 애정에 바탕을 둔 자연적 산물이라는 본질주의적 입장을 벗어난다. 격동기 사회 변동에 대한 적응과 생존의 기반으로서 끊임없이 시대적 요구에 부응하면서 구성되어 왔다는 것이 본고의 가족주의에 관한 입장이다. 가족주의의에 부여된 시대적 요구를 수행하기 위해서 일사분란한 위계화가 필요하게 되었으며, 이는 힘의 분배량에 따른 파시즘의 체계를 수락하는 결과로 귀착될 수밖에 없게 되었다. 『영웅시대』를 식민과 그 대항이데올로기인 탈식민의 양상으로 볼 수밖에 없는 이유는 여기에 있다. 본고는 『영웅시대』를 통해서 가족주의가 식민주의를 수행하는 양상, 식민주의가 거부되는 징후, 그리고 새로운 양태의 식민, 즉 신식민주의로 귀결되는 양상을 살펴보고자 했다. 이렇게 『영웅시대』의 가족주의를 식민과 탈식민의 징후로 고찰하게 될 때, 작가 이문열 중심의 논의에서 작품의 본질에 충실한 연구의 방식으로 옮겨갈 수 있을 것이다.

The family dealt in Hero Age is vacant sign. Not a one time the family had not been shown as a whole unit. In Hero Age, all characters disguise a family with an entity for a non-existing family during their entire lives. They are making a family in their own imagination. If a family of an ideal and perfect unity which had been absent from the beginning of the novel has been considered as real, the family in Hero Age is already for familism. If a family is an imagination about a family, the most important thing in the discussion about a family would be familism. However, in the process to actualize this imagination, familism turn into colonialism by necessity. This thesis concentrated in this point so it tried to find out the colonialism of familism which derogate the human while promoting a family and the symptom of de-colonialism detected faintly as characters starting to doubt a family itself. The symptom expressed in here because the character in Hero Age is captured in familism with a absolute viewpoint of insider, introspected and returned. As a lack of showing thinking and reflecting familism outside of boundary of familism, the colonialism in Hero Age, the de-colonialism exist only as mere symptom.
