이 글은 1991년부터 2002년까지 중학교 교과서에 실렸던 신경림의 「가난한 사랑노래」를 새롭게 해석하여, 중등학교 교실에서의 시 이해와 교수 과정에서 엄정한 해석이 중요함을 강조하려는 시도이다. 이 작품에 대한 기존의 해석들이 관점상의 편향으로 인해 재해석의 여지를 남기고 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 「가난한 사랑노래」의 해석들이 오류를 띠게 된 것은 이들이 딛고 선 관점자체보다는 그 불철저한 적용 때문으로 보인다. 반영론을 수용한 교사용 지도서가 작중 현실의 의미를 모호하게 일반화시킨 것이나, 존재론적 시각을 지닌 비판론이 특별한 내재 분석 없이 작품의 현실 인식을 부정한 데서 이를 알 수 있다. 이들은 공통적으로 「가난한 사랑노래」의 주제의식을 문면에 드러난 대로 `가난과 사랑의 대립`으로 파악하였다. 그 결과 이 시는 주제와 표현 양면에서 합당한 해석적 조명을 받지 못하고, 서민적 애환을 노래한 범상한 작품, 또는 이해가 곤란한 태작으로 여겨지게 되었다. 이에 이 글은, 한편으로 당대의 사회 환경과 이에 대한 시인 신경림의 의식적 지향을 참조하고, 또 한편으로는 작품의 내적 구조를 이루는 역설적 문맥을 자세히 분석함으로써 균형적 해석을 끌어내려 하였다. 그 결과로 「가난한 사랑노래」의 주제의식은 `현대인 일반의 마음의 가난`에도 `가난한 자에 대한 연민`에도 있지 않다는 판단에 도달하였다. 이 시는 구체적인 가난 체험에 바탕하여 당대의 `모순=가난`을 사회적 차원에서 시정하려는 운동가의 목소리를 담고 있었다. 이러한 사회적 소임과 개인적 삶 사이의 갈등, 그리고 인물들의 괴로운 내면에 대한 깊은 공감의 시선이 `가난하기 때문에 모든 것을 버려야 한다`는 역설적 구문에 스며 있는 것이다. 이를 `운동과 사랑의 대립`이라 요약할 수 있다. 이와 같은 작업은 중등학교 문학 교육에서 엄정한 해석이 중요함을 새삼 일깨워준다. 해석은 다양할 수 있고 관점 또한 그래야 하지만, 상호 존중과 소통의 노력이 없을 때 다양성은 곧 부분적 폐쇄성이 될 수 있다. 이 글은 이를 시정하기 위한 시도이지만, 한 편의 작품을 대상으로 한 논의 결과를 쉽사리 일반화시키기는 어려우므로 더 많은 후속 작업을 기약하는 제한적 시론이라 할 수 있다.

This writing aims to point up the importance of a rigorous reading and proper understanding of poetry in middle school classes, by putting Shin Kyung Lim`s 「The Poor Love Song」 in a new light which was in middle school texts from 1991 to 2002. The existing two different views on this work, one in the teacher`s manual and Professor Lee Nam Ho`s arguments against this view, leave room for re-examination due to their biased points of views. The faulty readings of 「The Poor Love Song」 come from superficial application rather than their erroneous points of views. This is evident in that the teacher`s manual, which assumes reflection theory, vaguely generalizes the meaning of the poetic reality, while the critical theory based on objective theory denies the realistic awareness of the work without delving into implications of the poetic text. `Poverty against Love` is reckoned as the poetic theme by both views, which is a rather straightforward reading of the title. As a result the poem did not receive proper analytic consideration and was read as a common piece of work that sang the life of the commoners, or an abstruse piece of writing hard to decode. Under this situation this writing attempts to induce a balanced interpretation of the poem by surveying the social conditions of the time and the poet`s views toward it while on the other hand, by providing a detailed reading of the paradoxical contexts that constitute the inner structure of the poem. Such an attempt has led the writer to a conclusion that the theme of 「The Poor Love Song」 is not `spiritual poverty of the ordinary contemporaries` nor `compassion toward the poor.` The poem has the voice of an activist who, based on his physical experience of poverty, wished to correct, on the social level, the absurd reality of the time that can be summarized as `contradiction = poverty.` A deeply compassionate gaze upon the conflict between the social mission and the life of an individual, as well as the inner distress of the poetic characters is embedded in the paradoxical words of `One must abandon everything due to poverty.` It can be summarized as `confrontation between movement and love.` All these point to the importance of rigorous readings of the texts in the literary training in middle schools. There can be diverse interpretations and varied view points, but without mutual respect and efforts to communicate, diversity can easily fall into partial exclusiveness. Though this writing is an attempt to correct such a state, it is a rather limited piece of poetics that invites further investigation, as it is difficult to generalize the conclusion from an analytic reading of one literary text.
