현종의 비 명성왕후가 남긴 언문 편지를 토대로 왕실 여성의 사적인 측면과 공적인 측면에 대해서 검토하고 있다. 명성왕후가 남긴 언간에는 생활세계와 관련된 일반적인 성격을 띤 것 외에도 공적인 측면과 연계된 정치적인 성격을 지닌 것도 남아 있기 때문이다. 조선사회에서 한문과는 달리 언문은 상대적으로 그 가치가 부수적이며, 또한 부녀자들의 그것으로 여겨지고는 했다. 여성들은 언문을 활발하고 쓰고 있었으며, 왕실 여성들 역시 예외는 아니었다. 왕후는 언문으로 쓴 교서를 내리기도 했는데 그것은 공식적인 성격을 갖는 것이었다. 명성왕후는 셋째 딸 명안공주에게 언간을 보냈다. 명안공주는 명성왕후와 현종, 그리고 숙종의 사랑을 듬뿍 받았다. 어머니는 물론이고 아버지, 오라버니 역시 그녀에게 언문으로 쓴 편지를 보낼 정도였다. 이를 통해서 가족 간의 사랑을 확인해볼 수 있었다. 인간적인 사랑은 왕실이라 해서 특별히 다르지 않았다. 주목할 만한 사실은 명성왕후가 송시열에게도 중요한 내용을 담은 언문 편지를 보냈다는 점이다. 송시열을 조정으로 불러 들여 그와 서인세력을 왕의 지지 세력으로 삼고자 했다. 정치적인 의도가 있었다. 정쟁에 휘말려 조정을 떠나 있던 송시열로서도 마다할 이유는 없었다. 명성왕후는 송시열에 대해서 유학자의 종주(宗主)라 칭했으며, 송시열은 명성왕후를 가리켜 여중요순(女中堯舜), 즉 여인 중의 요, 순 임금이라 화답했다. 일종의 정치적 연대가 이루어진 셈이다. 명성왕후는 언문을 통해서 개인적이고 일상적인 생활세계를 충분히 영위하고 있었다. 인간의 본연적인 감정과 자식 사랑 등을 여실히 표현하고 또 전달하고 있었다. 하지만 언문의 위력과 효용은 거기에 머물러 있지는 않았다. 명성왕후는 당시 대표적인 양반사대부에게 자신의 깊은 뜻을 전달하기도 했다. 말하자면 언문을 통해서 고도의 정치적인 행위까지도 구사하고 있었다.
This article analyzes the private and public aspects of women of royal family, based on Eongan (Hangul letter) from Queen Myeongseong, the queen of King Hyeonjong. Her letters had the political character related to the public side, in addition to the general aspects associated with the personal life. Unlike Chinese texts, Hangul was relatively evaluated as incidental and even regarded as the language of women in the Joseon dynasty. In reality, women of Joseon society were actively using Hangul and those of royal family were no exception. The Queen also wrote Eongyo(諺敎), which had an official character. Queen Myeongseong used to send the Eongan to her third daughter, princess Myungahn. The princess was much loved by Queen Myeongseong, King Hyeonjong, and her older brother, King Sukjong. She also received the letters written in Hangul from her father and brother, as well as her mother. It reveals that they could confirm the love between family members by writing letters, just like ordinary people. Notable fact is that Queen Myeongseong sent a letter in Hangul with important content to Song Si-yeol. To expand the political influence of King Hyeonjong, she asked Song and his political force, Seoin, to support the King. Song had no reason to reject it, because he was leaving the palace after the political struggle at the time. Queen Myeongseong called Song as the Master of Confucianism, and Song responded that she deserved to be called as `Yeo-jung-Yo-Sun(女中堯舜)`, which means a wise queen. It was a kind of political solidarity. As above, Queen Myeongseong fully managed not only her personal life, but also political life, using Hangul. She expressed the human nature like love for children, etc, and even communicated to the most typical nobleman(Song) with highly political intention by writing in Hangul. In other words, Queen Myeongseong used Hangul as the powerful and effective language.
