<단군신화>는 한국인의 현재생활에도 영향을 미치고 있는 한국건국신화로서 외국인이 한국을 알기 위해 읽어보아야 할 이야기다. <단군신화>의 영역본은 1911년부터 최근까지 100여 년 동안 여러 종이 출판되어 왔다. 초기의 번역은 한국의 문화를 알리는 목적으로 동화처럼 각색이 되어 영역되었고, 1970년대 이후에는 한국의 신화를 알린다는 목적으로 『삼국유사』 원전을 온전히 옮기려는 시도가 많았다. 그러나 『삼국유사』가 한문으로 기록되어 있고, 신화는 상징을 포함하고 있어 한국학자 사이에도 해석의 이견이 많은 탓에, 영역본에도 이러한 양상이 반영되고 있다. 한편, 초기의 번역본들 중에는 이러한 원전해독의 문제가 아니라 역자의 왜곡된 시각으로 인한 잘못된 내용들이 보인다. 그리피스의 영역본에서는 미개한 한국인을 문명하고 현명한 기자(箕子)가 와서 개화시켰다는 내용이 허무맹랑한 에피소드로 구성되어 담겨있고, 카펜터의 영역본에서도 기자가 와서 한국인을 가르쳤을 뿐 아니라, 일본에 점령되었던 한국을 고마운 미국인이 와서 해방시켰다고 서술하고 있다. 이후 정인섭, 하태흥 등의 번역자들은 원전을 많이 반영한 영역본을 내놓았고, 후대의 피터 리, 맥캔, 그레이슨과 같은 한국문학 전공자들은 학자의 입장에서 원전을 그대로 영역하고 있어, 내용의 전달에는 큰 문제가 없었다. 하지만 현재 후대의 영역본들보다 카펜터의 영역본이 미국의 시장에서 압도적으로 더 많이 팔리고 있고, 웹사이트에서 좋은 평가를 받고 있어, 시정이 요구된다.
“The myth of Dangun” is the foundation myth of Korea and has had an effect on Korean`s life. Therefore a foreigner who wants to know about Korea has to read it. The English versions of “The myth of Dangun” have been published from 1911 to now. The versions in the early stage were adapted into fairy tales to introduce Korean culture outside of Korea. After 1970s, many translators tried to translate the original text fully, to introduce a foundation myth of Korea to foreigners. In some part of the original text, the interpretation is various among Korean scholars. Therefore, these are reflected in the translated versions. On the other hand, not the interpretation but the translator`s distorted viewpoints were reflected in some English versions. Griffis wrote that the wise man, Jizi(箕子) came to Korea and he taught the uncivilized Koreans. In Carpenter`s version, we can find that Jizi enlighten Koreans and Americans liberated Koreans from Japan. After that, Jung In-seop and Ha Tae-hung made almost full translated versions. And Peter Lee, David McCann and Grayson who are major in Korean literature, published complete translated versions. However Carpenter`s version has been selling better than the latest versions. What was worse, it has received good reviews on the web sites. It should be corrected soon.
