이 논문에서는 이병주 문학의 온전한 자리매김을 위한 시도의 일환으로, 그의 중·단편 소설에 나타난 서사적 자의식을 고찰하였다. 이는 이병주의 문학을 바라보는 편향된 시선, 즉 과도하게 의미를 부여하거나 혹은 의도적으로 외면해온 태도를 지양(止揚)하고, 그의 작품을 객관적으로 평가해 보자는 의도에서 비롯되었다. 이병주의 등단작 「소설·알렉산드리아」는 `환각(상상력)`을 통해 현실의 벽을 넘어서려는 의지를 표출한다. 작가는 자신을 감옥에 가둔 부정한 정치현실에 맞설 이데올로기가 필요했던 것이며, `소설 양식`은 정치권력의 폭력과 일정한 거리를 유지하며 스스로의 처지를 변호할 적당한 글쓰기 형식이었다. 이후 발표된 「마술사」, 「쥘부채」, 「예낭풍물지」등은 `환각`이 현실 정치(역사)에 응전하는 방식을 보여주는 작품들이다. 「소설·알렉산드리아」가 소설 양식이라는 관념 그 자체로 정치현실에 반응했다면, 위의 작품들은 환각의 의미 탐색을 통해 현실세계에 한 걸음 다가서고 있다. 이른바 `환각의 존재 방식`을 통해 소설에 대한 자의식을 표출한 경우이다. 「변명」과 「겨울밤」에서는 작가가 추구해온 `환각`의 세계가 역사에 대한 `변명`으로 구체화된다. 「변명」에서 소설은 섭리(당위/이성)와, 이 섭리를 배반하는 현실 사이를 매개하는 그 어떤 것으로 기능한다. 「겨울밤ㅡ어느 황제의 회상」은 역사에 대한 변명을 `어떻게`할 것인가의 문제를 구체적으로 형상화하고 있다. 이 작품에 이르러 소설(문학)은 `기록과 시의 조합`이란 구체적 형상을 부여받는다. 이는 경직된 이념(신념)에 거리감을 가지는 것이며, 이념을 인간화하는 방법이기도 하다. 이병주의 중·단편 소설은 현실에 응전하는 작가의식이 문학 양식의 의미에 대한 탐색으로 변주되고 있음을 보여준다. 이는 소설을 통해 소설의 의미를 탐색한 경우인데, 문학의 본질을 정치 현실과 연관하여 본격적으로 추적한 사례에 해당한다. 이를 통해 시대현실에 응전하는 서사적 자의식의 일면을 살펴볼 수 있었다.

This study consider self-consciousness about narrative in Lee Byeong-ju`s a medium-length story and short story. That is try to the whole estimation about Lee Byeong-ju`s literary work. And this overcome the limitations of Lee Byeong-ju`s leterary work without bias. His first novel, 「NovelㆍAlexandria」 represent volition of beyond the barrier of reality by `hallucination(imagination)`. He needs ideology against the political reality in a jail. And `novel` is proper writing style for self-justification, at the same time, give politics of violence a wide berth. 「A Magician」, 「A Folding Fan」 and 「Life in Yenang」 represent a response to political reality(history) by `hallucination`. Those close on reality by meaning of hallucination, on the other hand, 「NovelㆍAlexandria」close on the political reality by itself. This means representation of self-consciousness for `reason for being of hallucination`. Henceforth, the hallucination change to `an excuse` in 「An Excuse」and 「The Winter night」. Novel function as a medium between providence (appropriateness/ideal) and reality of infraction in 「An Excuse」. 「The Winter night-A reminiscence of an empero」 deals with an excuse on history what to do. A Novel(Literature) invested with a detailed form of `Mixture of a record and poetry` at the 「The Winter night-A reminiscence of an emperor」. This give stiff ideology(belief) a wide berth with humanize the ideology. Self-awareness as writer change to search for meaning literary style from a response to political reality in Lee`s a medium-length story and short story. This case search for meaning of novel by itself. And the case connected with the essence of literature and political reality. Therefore it should be able to search of narrative self-consciousness as a response to reality.
