이 논문은 한국문학에서 그동안 낭만주의가 이해되어 온 방식을 검토하여 특정한 낭만주의, 즉 초기낭만주의라 할 수 있는 낭만주의는 배제되어 망각된 양상을 살펴보았다. 초기 낭만주의와 후기 낭만주의의 자질들에 대한 변별적 이해 없이 낭만주의가 지칭됨으로써 야기된 결과가 무엇이었는지를 탐색하여 배제된 낭만주의 복권의 정당선 여부를 제언하고자 했다. 낭만주의에 대한 부정적 견해는 문학 담론의 장 안에서 낭만주의를 배제하는 결과를 나았다. 그 결과 `감정`에 대한 편향된 이해가 이어졌다. <반성-전-감정>의 영역으로서의 <감정>은 지속되고 <반성-후-감정>으로서의 <감정>은 망각된 채 수면 아래에서만 존재하는 양상을 보였다. <반성-전-감정>으로서의 감정은 낭만주의라는 이름을 달지 않은 채 민족주의 이데올로기와의 천연성 때문에 당당하게 존재해왔는데 근래에는 민족주의 이데올로기 비판의 표적의 하나로 낭만주의가 지목되기도 했다. 문제는 그것이 후기 낭만주의적 자질이라는 것이고 반면에 수면 아래에서 주로 존재하는 낭만주의는 비판적 읽기의 형태로서 자신의 이름이 적극적으로 호명되지 못한 채로 지속되어 왔다는 것이다. 이는 낭만주의의 역사에서 볼 때 초기낭만주의라 할 수 있는데, 이것이 복권되어야 하는 이유는 <반성-후-감정>의 문제, <상상력>의 문제, <주관성>의 문제가 모두 이 낭만주의라는 뿌리로부터 배태되기 때문이다. 그러므로 이제 낭만주의에서의 사조적 접근을 지양하고 낭만주의에 대한 통시적 접근을 할 필요가 있다. 그럼으로써 낭만주의를 총체적으로 규명하여 한국문학 전반에 흐르고 있는 낭만성을 새롭게 주목한다면 한국문학의 복합성이 보다 포괄적으로 드러날 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문이 강조하는 바는, 전적으로 문학작품 `읽기`의 영역에 관계되는 담론 안에서의 흐름이지 문학작품 자체의 양상과는 차이를 갖고 있다는 것을 밝혀둔다.

In this paper, I argued how the essential part of pre-romanticism has been excluded and rendered to be forgotten in the field of Korean literature by examining the way it has been comprehended. Investigating the result that has brought about from the designating romanticism without distinctive apprehension, I attempted to propose to reconsider the feasibility of rehabilitation of romanticism. The negative interpretation of romanticism has brought about the consequence to that romanticism has been excluded from the field of Korean literary discourse. In result, the biased understanding of Emotion reigns. To say more precisely, pre-reflective-emotion lasts while post-reflective-emotion stays undersurface. The pre-reflective-emotion has sailed into the discourse having been rent the label says “romanticism” which has lately been detected as a target of Nationalism critique. The matter is that it is the post-romantic characteristic and the (pre-)romanticism undersurface left as a mode of critical reading without any reasonable formal calling from above. The reason why it has to be rehabilitate is that the essential issues of post-reflective-emotion, imagination, subjectivity are all arose from one root, romanticism. When we sublate the approaches based on the trend of the literary thought and examine romanticism on the whole, so we could pay valid attention to the properties of romanticism that have run through the entire Korean modern literature, the complexity of it would be brought to light more comprehensively. I add the point this paper emphasize on is entirely related with the current of the discourse of `reading` literary text, so it must be differentiated from the modes of the texts themselves.
