한국 문학사에 있어서 국권상실이라는 충격적인 사건은 문학의 여러 측면에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 출판의 방향과 작가 및 번역가의 역할, 외래 서사의 수용 등에서 선명한 변화가 있었던 것이다. 특히 국권 상실기를 전후로 한 1890년부터 1919년까지의 번역 및 번안 문학은 이 결정적인 사건을 접하며 내·외적 요인에 의해 크게 변화하였다. 국권상실기 이전의 번역 및 번안 서사가 특정한 목적, 즉 애국과 교육 계몽의 목적을 위해 수용되고 전파되었다면, 이 시기 이후의 서사들은 규제와 검열에 의해 전혀 다른 방향으로 전개되었던 것이다. 국권 상실기 이후 급속도로 유입된 일본 통속 소설류의 번역물은 이 같은 특징을 분명하게 보여주는 예라고 할 수 있다. 또한 이 시기를 전후로 하여 외래 서사를 수용하는 방법론인, 서술 방법의 변화도 선명하였다. 역사 서술 방법에만 의존하던 번역 및 번안 서사들은 신소설의 서술 방법을 차용했고 그 내용도 점차 통속화된 신소설의 성향을 닮아갔다. 이 같은 양상은 기존의 창작 서사의 전개 과정에서 보이는 서술 방법의 변모 양상보다 더욱 분명하게 변화 과정을 드러내주고 있다. 그렇기에 이 시기를 전후로 한 번역 및 번안 서사의 서술 방법을 고찰하는 것은 한국 근대 소설사의 발전 과정을 보완하는 역할을 할 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다.

The period under the Japanese colonial rule of Korea (1890-1919) had a big impact on the Korean literature history. There were distinct changes in the directions of publication, roles of writers and translators, and introduction of foreign works. In particular, significant changes were made in translation and adaptation works during this period due to internal and external factors. While the works had been introduced mainly for patriotic and educational purposes before the period, Japanese control and censorship completely changed such trend afterwards. A surge in the translation works of Japanese popular novels clearly explained such change. There were also changes in narrative type, a methodology for foreign works. Translation and adaptation works, which had been previously dependent on historical narrative, started to use the narrative of shin-soseol (new novel) and showed similarity with shin-soseol in terms of story. Narrative changes were more distinct in translation and adaptation works than in Korean novels. Therefore, studying such changes in translation and adaptation works in the period will give a better understanding of the development process of Korean modern novel history.
