최근 교육현장에서 문학사 교육은 축소 위기에 직면해 있다. 처음에는 과거의 문학사 교육이 단편적 지식의 암기 교육에 그쳤다는 비판이 제기되었다. 지식의 암기보다는 문학적 경험이 중요하다고 판단하였기 때문이다. 이처럼 문학적 경험과 문학적 실천이 강조되면서 지식을 강조하는 문학사 교육이 퇴조하게 되었다. 하지만 본 논문은 문학사 교육이 지식의 주입에서 그치지 않는다는 것을 보여주고자 했다. 문학사 교육에 문화사 개념을 도입하면 지식 중심의 기존 문학사 교육의 한계를 극복할 수 있다는 것이다. 기존의 문학사 교육에서는 문학 개념을 당연한 것으로 전제하는 경향이 있다. 문학사 교육은 문학의 정전을 전수하고 보존하는 방법이었던 것이다. 하지만 문화사의 관점을 도입하면 문학은 이미 완성된 것이 아니라 생성과정에 있는 유동적인 대상으로 간주된다. 문학은 문화적 산물인 것이다. 그러므로 문학사 교육에 문화사의 관점을 도입하면 문학이라는 것이 문화적 환경의 변화에 따라서 변형될 수 있다는 생각을 강조할 수 있게 된다. 이렇게 되면 문학사 교육은 고정된 지식의 전수 방법이 아니라 문학의 생성 배경을 확인하는 과정이 된다. 최근 문화적 환경의 급변으로 인해 문학 교육에도 많은 변화가 있었다. 문자 매체에 의존하는 문학을 구시대의 유물로 간주하는 태도도 나타나고 있다. 그러므로 과거의 문학 정전을 전수하려고 노력하기보다는 문학이 문화적 산물이며 지금도 생성 중에 있다는 것을 알려주어야 한다. 문학 문화의 개념을 도입함으로써 문학사 교육은 과거의 지식을 교육하는 것이 아니라 문학의 현재적 상황을 이해하는 바탕이 될 것이다. 본 논문은 그 사례로서 문학 개념에 큰 변화가 있었던 개화기를 선정하고, 최남선의 문학적 실험에 전제되어 있는 문화적 배경을 해명하고자 했다. 창가와 신체시와 같은 실험적 작품들은 최남선의 문화적 사명감이 반영된 결과물임을 알게 되었다. 그것이 `바다`에 대한 새로운 관점, 그리고 역사 지리학적 전망에서 비롯된 것임을 밝히고자 했다. 이를 통해서 문학 문화 개념이 문학사 교육에서 새 방향을 제시해줄 것임을 확인할 수 있었다.

The education on the history of literature confronts a crisis of reduction from the university curriculum nowadays. At first the education on the history of literature was rejected by the critical comment that the education on the history of literature had been only a memorizing education not a direct abundant experience concerned with literature. However taking lesson in the history of literature is not just a acquisition of some new literal knowledge but a process of confirming the background of producing literature. Literature is a creature of the culture. Therefore the works of literature remained in the history are not the fixing canons as like a museum specimen. The circumstance around literature is rapidly changing a lot. Literature is regarded as the remains of the old era because a letter not a picture or a screen is the medium that conveys the contents of literature. So today we need the teacher in the literature class who let the student know the new discovery that literature is not the unchangeability in the narrow history of literature but the fluid object in the wider history of culture. The literature experiments by Choi, Nam Sun in the enlightenment period are the good examples for this pedagogic argument which the history of literature should be included in the history of culture. The great change in the concept of literature happened during the enlightenment period in Korea. Choi, Nam Sun, the brilliant poet and critic and publisher created the serial experimental works as like a song named `Chang-ga` or a new-style poem named `Sin-che-si` grounded on the cultural mission of the age. He introduced korean a new angle on a `sea` and completed the mission with the considerate prospect from historical geography. As the result of this study, we confirm that the concepts of the literature as a culture phenomenon will show us a new direction in the class of the history of literature.
