1914년에 창작·유통된 신작 구소설 「이두충렬록」은 이태원과 두성완이란 남녀주인공의 삶을 서사화한 작품인데, 주인공의 비범한 탄생, 남녀인물의 정혼, 가족과의 분리와 수난, 문무 학습, 국가에의 공훈, 가족과의 재회 및 혼인 등의 내용을 통해 볼 때, 전대고소설 중에서 영웅소설 유형과 가까운 작품이다. 그 중에서 영웅성이 남녀주인공 모두에게 나타난다는 점에서 여성영웅소설과 더 가깝다. 여성인물들의 단합을 통한 남편의 소외, 맹혈 모티프 등의 등장은 장편가문소설의 영향도 있었음을 짐작케 한다. 「이두충렬록」에는 전대 고소설의 수용뿐만 아니라 변모된 점이나 새로운 성격도 발견된다. 그중에서 가장 주목되는 변별성은 이태원과 두성완이 학습과 입신 사이에 수난에 처한 인물들을 구조한다는 점이다. 그리고 수난의 요인으로 살인, 폭행, 탈취, 감금 등의 폭력적 현실이 제시되어 있다는 점이다. 또한 이 작품에는 재물, 매매, 성에 대한 관념도 두드러지게 나타난다. 그런데 이러한 점은 전대 고소설에는 거의 나타나지 않고, 본 작품이 창작된 시대에 유통되었던 신소설에 주로 나타나는 것이다. 따라서 「이두충렬록」에 보이는 변모와 새로움은 신소설의 주된 영향을 받아 생긴 것으로 보인다. 신소설의 영향은 역순행적 구성이라는 서사전개 방식에서도 확인된다. 「이두충렬록」의 분석을 통해, 우리는 신작 구소설의 한 특징과, 고소설, 신소설, 단형서사체, 현대소설 등이 복잡하게 얽힌 상태로 향유되던 20세기 초반에, 고소설이 어떠한 방식으로 당대의 소설 환경에 적응해 갔는가 하는 점을 이해할 수 있게 되었다.

This work described life Yitaeone(이태원)and Dusungwan(두성완). Yiduchungyeulrok is composed families novel 1910`s. That is, new work ancient novel was influenced by new novel. separation, engagement of man and woman, sufferings of characters, study on literacy and martial arts, brilliant exploits, reunion and marriage etc. Therefore this work was formed by influenced of hero and heroine novel. Also this work was formed by influenced of long families novel. In this work, heroic deed better in heroine than hero. The hero and heroine meet seveal women. And they go through various sufferings. A cause of sufferings is violence. It was composed murder, assault, deodorization, confinement etc. And this violence is mainly appears on new novel at 1910`s. In according to, Yiduchungyeulrok was influenced by new novel. Yiduchungyeulrok is composed by opposite on naarrative unfold method. This also was influenced by new novel. In through analysis on Yiduchungyeulrok, we understanded existence way of ancient Novel 1910`s. That is, new work ancient novel was influenced by new novel.
