이 논문은 오영수의 「갯마을」에 나타난 자연과 인간의 복잡한 관련성과 특정한 경험에 역사적 지평을 부여하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 무엇보다도 오영수의 인물들은 자연에게서 주체성을 박탈하는 과정의 어느 지점에서 숭고의 형태로 그 자연이 경외감을 자아내는 시대에 산다. 그리고 그들은 이른바 문명화 과정이 수반하게 되는 자연으로부터의 자유라는 관념에서 자만이 아닌 겸손이라는 아주 다른 종류의 자기보존을 체현한다. 오영수의 「갯마을」에 이르러 자연과 인간의 관계는 자연으로부터 주체성을 박탈하고 인간 스스로가 주체성을 행사하는 이른바 근대적인 전회를 이룩한다. 그러나 그 전회는 자연에 대한 세속적인 이해와 곧바로 결합되었던 것이 아니라 자연의 숭고성으로부터 오는 초월적 차원에 대한 경험을 통해 주체성을 겸손이라는 태도와 결합하는 특별한 단계를 거치게 된 것이다. 한마디로 갯마을 사람들은 인간이 자연의 숭고함에 비추어 아무것도 아니라는 것을 아는 데서 오는 겸손의 평화를 굴종이 아닌 자유의 결과로서 아름답게 보여준다. 이것은 오영수의 「갯마을」이 가지는 매력의 핵심이기도 하다.

This thesis aims to give historical meaning to a specific experience, that is to say, a complicated relationship between nature and the human being in Oh, Yeong-su`s 「Seaside Village」. Above all, characters in the novel live in the time when nature extracts a feeling of awe in form of the sublime from a certain point of the process which they deprive the nature of its subjectivity. And they embody a quite different kind of self-preservation, not conceit but humility from the idea that is freedom from nature, accompanied by the so-called process of civilization. When the korean novels reached Oh, Yeong-su`s 「Seaside Village」, the relationship of nature and man accomplishes the so-called modern conversion that man deprives subjectivity from nature and himself exercises it. But at once the conversion is not combined with a secular understanding about nature. In fact, it goes through the special phase that subjectivity is combined with the modesty attitude from a experience about the transcendental dimension which comes from the sublime of nature. In a word, peoples in the seaside village show beautifully the peace of humility as result of not submission but freedom, from which they know a fact that human beings are just a small thing in the light of the natural sublime. Indeed this is also the core of the charm which 「Seaside Village」 by Oh, Yeong-su has.
