본고는 전상국의 등단작인 「동행」 (1963)에 나타난 알레고리적 상상력을 연구하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 이 작품은 추리소설적 기법을 동원하여 독자의 호기심을 자극한 1960년대 대표소설 중 하나이다. 특히 `허전한 느낌`의 걸음걸이를 지닌 살인범과 `정확한 걸음걸이`의 형사를 대비하여 여로형 소설이 지닌 대비적 인물 구도를 표면화한 작품이다. 그리하여 휴머니즘의 공유를 통한 상처의 치유와 극복의 모색이라는 작품의 주제의식을 강화한다. 겨울의 동행은 피의자와 추적자라는 대결적 구도를 완화하면서 `무서움`의 공유를 통해 생명의 소중함을 환기하게 한다. 즉 휴머니즘이라는 거울을 통과함으로써 법치주의적 관점이 아니라 실존주의적 가치의 승리를 표방하게 된다. 개인적 실존이 공공 윤리의 적용에 선행한다는 문학적 진정성을 보여주고 있는 것이다. 본고는 「동행」 이 추리적 구조를 저변에 깔고 토끼 이야기, 장갑 실오래기와 광 모티프, 창녀의 인생관, 사색의 담배와 자조적 웃음 등의 소설적 장치가 알레고리적 상상력으로 작동하고 있음을 고찰하였다. 그리하여 형사와 살인범이 현실 세계로부터 공포와 불안, 죄의식을 내면화한 채 운명에 순응하며 생존을 이어갈 수밖에 없는 존재이지만, 그러한 상처를 공유함으로써 가해자와 피해자라는 이분법적 논리를 넘어서는 휴머니즘의 생명 윤리를 강조하고 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 전상국의 동행 은 가시적인 소설적 장치들이 반복적으로 제시되면서 비가시적이고 중층적인 의미들이 새롭게 덧붙여지는 알레고리적 상상력을 통해 심리적 외상을 극복하는 이야기인 것이다.

This study managed to examine allegorical imagination in Jeon sang-guk` [Donghaeng(go with)]. This text is a reasoning story. The story that stimulates readers was one of the best novels in the 1960s. The work that is short man with emptying feeling in contrast long man with exact steps comes to the surface at character structure. Its subject is share of humanism through cure of separated injury and seeking of overcome. It reinforces theme. Especially, initially anonymously existed two characters－murderer and detective－reveal own truth. Revealing structure of truth of company is proper idea. winter accompany relieves suspect and pursuer. And it arouses value of lives through share of fear. Thus, the work is not constitutionalism (rule of law) but win of existential value. Individual existence shows literary authentic in preceding at pubic ethical application. Therefore, ethic of sympathy holds a prominent position ethic of legal. The similarity and difference of possessing ethic of murderer and detective contributes revealing the value.
