박범신의 『나마스테』는 외국인 노동자들의 인권문제와 한국인들의 외국인에 대한 이중적 태도, 한국인과 이주노동자와의 결혼문제를 비롯한 다문화사회에 진입한 한국 사회의 문제들을 다루고 있다. 『나마스테』는 기존의 작품에서 이주노동자와 한국인과의 애정관계 또는 결혼생활의 문제가 주로 한국인 남성 중심이었던 점과는 다르게, 한국인 여성을 중심인물로 설정하여 이주노동자들에 대한 차별과 문화적 갈등을 그리고 있다. 그런데 중심인물인 신우와 카밀이 결손성 인물이고, 두 사람의 관계가 정상적인 청춘남녀의 관계로 설정되어 있지 않다. 이것은 이주노동자들에 대한 한국인들의 부정적 인식을 은연중에 반영하고 있다고 하겠다. 그리고 이주노동자들을 보살피는 신우의 헌신적 노력과 외국인을 차별하는 외국인 근로자 고용법의 개선을 촉구하며 분신자살을 감행하는 카밀의 영웅적 행위는 이주노동자들이 처한 현실을 부각시키려는 작가의 의도라 하겠다. 『나마스테』에서 다문화사회를 위해 한국 사회가 지향해야 할 바로 외국인 근로자 고용법의 개선을 위해 노력하는 민혜주의 모습과, 이질적인 문화와 종교 등에 대해 차별과 배타성이 없는 불교적 사유방식이 주목해야 할 가치로 제시된다. 민혜주는 외국인 근로자들이 작업 중에 당한 재해를 비롯한 여러 가지 어려움을 해결하기 위해 노력하고, 불법체류자를 양산하는 외국인 근로자 공용법의 개선을 위해서도 적극적으로 활동한다. 그리고 이질적인 문화와 종교 등에 대해 차별과 배타성이 없는 불교적 사유는 `내 것`과 `네 것`으로 구별되는 물질 중심의 욕망과 집착으로 야기되는 갈등과 고통을 벗어나기 위한 반성적 기제로 제시된다. 이러한 『나마스테』에서 제시된 상생의 방안들은 새로운 문학양식의 도출과 한국문학의 외연을 확대할 수 있는 토대와 가능성을 지닌다는 점에서 의의가 있다고 하겠다.

Various efforts are being made by literature to solve the social problems caused by immigrant workers. Many pieces of literature discuss the problems caused by foreign immigrant workers, the civil awareness in the age of globalization, and the ways to resolve conflicts caused by racial and cultural differences. In this aspect, Park, Beom Shin`s 『Namaste』 is worth discussing. 『Namaste』 is a story of a Korean woman and a foreign immigrant worker. The center of the plot is their love and marriage. Unlike how most previous pieces focused on Korean men`s love and marriage with female immigrant workers, this piece selected a Korean woman as the main character to discuss the discrimination against and cultural conflicts of immigrant workers. Shin, Woo, the main character, is depicted as a heroic character, similar to a Buddhist saint. She offers her apartment as a shelter for illegal immigrant workers who have nowhere to go and demonstrates altruism in a way that most people cannot. Kamile, her husband, is also altruistic. Kamile protests for better environment and support for foreign immigrant workers by fasting and setting himself on a fire. This is a heroic act which most people cannot do. These acts of Shin and Kamile strongly emphasize the author`s idea that foreign workers should no longer be neglected and are intended to enlighten the readers. However, these heroic acts are effective for enlightening the people, but not very effective for changing the reality of immigrant workers. In this aspect, literature should make a more realistic approach to solve the cultural conflicts caused by immigrant workers and other foreigners in Korea.
