유진오는 그 위상에 비해 활발한 연구가 이루어지고 있는 작가가 아니다. 기존 연구가 축적된 결과이기도 하지만 유진오를 고려할 때 사회주의를 너무 큰 비중으로 다루었기 때문이다. 또한 『친일문학론』의 임종국이 친일을 하지 않았다고 규정하면서 유진오에 대한 인식의 폭이 좁아진 덕분이기도 하다. 주지하듯 일제말기는 세계를 해석하는 욕망이 거세된 것이 아니라 전통을 비롯한 문화와 동아협동체론 등 제국의 논리에 관심이 높아지던 시점이다. 30년대 말 이후의 유진오를 이해하기 위해서는 (사회주의와 함께) 이러한 맥락을 고려해야만 한다. 축적된 기존 (1930년대 후반 유진오)연구를 바탕으로 이글은 1935년부터 1945년경까지 시기를 국한하여 그 내면을 엿보고자 했다, 당시 유진오는 “所與의 환경”에서 조선민족을 유지해야 한다는 명분 아래 일본의 제국주의를 인정한 부분이 있었다. 또한 그의 내면에는 사회주의 사상과 전통문화에 대한 인식, 음악·과학·문화주택을 포함한 `근대문화`에 대한 열망 등이 중층적으로 존재하고 있었다. 민족주의적 저항이 제국주의에 대한 인정투쟁·일상의 욕망과 복잡하게 얽혀 있었던 것이다.

In addition, His inner state was longing for the passion toward the `Modern Cultures` such as the socialist ideology, the awareness of traditional culture, music, science, and culture housing. It means that he was complicated by relating recognition of nationalist resistance to imperialism; the struggle of daily desire.
