여타 사행록들과 달리 최현의 『조천일록』은 사적인 기록과 공적인 기록을 함께 포괄하고 있다. 6권으로 나누어져 있으며, 권1에 서계(書啓)(附 聞見事件 逐日附日錄)가 덧붙어 있고, 권6에 각종 정문들과 장계가 실려 있다. 물상들에 대하여 열린 관점을 갖고 있던 그는 사일기(私日記)와 공적인 기록으로 나누어 기록 안에서 목소리를 약간씩 다르게 처리할 수 있었던 것 같다. 그러나 `사`와 `공`을 나누었다 하여 글쓰기의 면에서 양자가 크게 변별되는 것은 아니다. 사적인 글쓰기가 주로 노정을 위주로 약간의 정서적 측면을 고려한 글쓰기였다면, 물상들의 제도적인 측면을 상세히 탐사하여 기록함으로써 나라의 이익에 기여하고자 한 것이 바로 `공적인` 글쓰기였다. 최현은 기록의 순간에 임할 때마다 사실 묘사나 기술에 충실해야 하고 고도로 상세해야 한다는 강박관념을 갖고 있었던 것처럼 보인다. 그러한 결과는 사명에 충실해야 한다는 공인으로서의 자세로부터 나온 것일 수 있으나, 사실은 당대의 지식인 관료 최현 스스로 갖고 있던 현실인식이나 견문을 국가 정책에 반영하여 합리성을 추구해야 한다는 생각의 소산이었을 것이다. 최현이 『조천일록』에서 보여준 글쓰기의 두드러진 장점은 시각적 이미지를 적절히 사용하여 견문에 대한 설명에서 구체성의 효과를 거둔 점, 상세한 탐문을 통해 스쳐 지나가는 `견문`으로는 쉽게 얻을 수 없는 정보를 상세하게 기록해 놓은 점 등이다. 양자 모두 사명을 수행하는 공인의 자세로부터 나온 결과였다. 단순히 정보의 기록으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 자신과 나라가 바탕으로 삼고 있던 이념적 색채까지 노출함으로써 범상치 않은 글쓰기의 일면을 보여주었다. 학계의 주된 연구대상인 김창업·홍대용·서유문·박지원·김경선 등 17～19세기 사행록의 흐름에서 시기 상 가장 앞자리를 차지하는 동시에 독특한 글쓰기의 양태를 보여준다는 점에서 최현의 『조천일록』은 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다고 본다.
Unlike the other travel logs by envoys to Beijing, Choe Hyun`s Jocheon Ilrok contains private diaries and public records together. It is divided into 6 parts. There is Seo gye(書啓) in the volume 1, various kinds of Jeong moon(呈文) and Jang gye(狀啓). He was able to treat voices in the text a little differently dividing into private diary and public report, owing to his open viewpoint. However, although he succeeded to divide it into private and public, we can`t say the two are distinguished clearly. The private was the writing style to think over emotional side giving the first consideration to itinerary, but the public writing was for the dynasty`s interest with exploring and recording the institutional side. Whenever he faced up to recording chance, he was likely to have an obsession to be faithful and minutely to descript facts. It came out of the attitude of public figure, but we can imagine it was a result of his recognition about reality or his desire to reflect the observation in dynasty`s development. The outstanding and strong point of his writing Jocheon Ilrok is that he succeed to obtain the effects of concreteness in explain about his observation using visual images appropriately. The second strong point is to record the rare information that is impossible to obtain with slight seeing and listening. It was a result from the public figure`s posture to accomplish his mission. It can`t be finished only with recording information. He showed a side of the uncommon writing skill with enclosing his ideological colour for national foundation. Like this, his Jocheon Ilrok the first step`s work in the history of travel log to Beijing by Kim, Chang-Up, Hong, Dae-Yong, Seo, Yu-Moon, Pak, Ji-Won, and Kim, Gyeong-Seon can be made an object of criticism as an example to show a unique writing style.
