항해 홍길주는 19세기 초에 활동했던 대표적인 문장가로, 고문의 토대 아래 소품의 장처를 수용하여 개성적인 문학을 완성했던 인물이다. 그는 농암 김창협의 학맥과 문맥을 이은 형 연천 홍석주의 영향으로 당송고문을 익혔고, 연암 박지원과 다산 정약용 등 전후 대문호들의 영향으로 고문의 경계를 일정정도 벗어날 수 있었다. 문장의 중원(中原)에서 이루어지는 고문과 소품의 자유로운 소통은 홍길주 문학의 개성적 향기를 만들어내는 중요한 질료가 될 뿐만 아니라, 고문과 소품이 공존했던 19세기 초 조선의 글쓰기 경향을 이해하는 데 있어서 중요한 지표가 될 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 고문관이 확립되고 탈고문적 성향이 발휘되는 지점에 관심을 집중시켰다. 그 결과 “활물(活物)과 활독서(活讀書), 차이와 개별성, 소통과 문장중원”이라는 비교기준을 마련할 수 있게 되었고, 이를 통해 고문과 탈고문의 경계를 보다 명확하게 제시할 수 있었다. 이것은 홍길주 문학의 한 특징이 될 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 고문과 소품의 교섭양상까지 살필 수 있는 중요한 단초가 될 것이다.

As Hong Gil-ju is a typically good writer in the early 19th century, he accepted a strong point of a short composition based on old prose, and then completed the individual literature. He learnt the old prose in Tang and Song due to the influence of Yeoncheon Hong Seok-ju, who succeeded to the context of Kim Chang-hyeop, and could escape from the boundary of old prose to some extent due to the influence of pre-and-post great writers such as Yeonam Park Ji-won. The communication in the old prose and the short composition, which is formed in Jungwon(中原) of a sentence, is the important substance that makes the characteristic of Hong Gil-ju`s literature, and may be the important index in understanding the tendency of literature in Joseon during the early 19th century. Accordingly, this study concentrated on a point that the view of old prose style was established and that the post-old prose propensity was displayed. As a result, the comparative criteria could be arranged that is the so-called “Hwalmul(活物) & Hwaldokseo(活讀書), difference & individuality, and communication & sentence Jungwon.” And, through this, the boundary in old prose and post-old prose could be presented more definitely. This is the important mechanism that allowed Hong Gil-ju`s literature to be born, and simultaneously, will be able to be important data in examining the aspect of connection between the old prose and the short composition at that time.
