본 논문은 18세기 학자 백수(白水) 양응수(楊應秀)의 독서법을 살펴 그 성격과 내용을 규명하고, 나아가 조선조 독서론과 대비하여 그 의미를 조명한 후 고전 독서론의 현재적 의의를 점검한 것이다. 백수의 독서법을 살핀 결과 그는 성리학 전통의 독서론을 계승하면서도 상대적으로 열린 독서 태도를 수용했다. 읽어서는 안 될 책이란 없다고 하였으며 경전의 풀이가 다르더라도 해될 것이 없다는 입장을 수용했다. 또 무조건 본문에 빠져들기보다는 종이밖에서 스스로 궁구하는 독서 태도를 강조하였다. 상황성과 때를 중시하는 권(權)과 중(中)을 이야기한 것도 고착화된 이전의 독서 습관과는 다른 유연한 태도였다. 18세기의 새로운 독서 환경은 성리학자들에게 열린 시각에서 독서할 것을 요구하고 있었다. 기존의 전통과 새로운 독서 환경이 충돌하자 백수는 적잖은 고민을 했을 것이며, 좀더 열린 입장을 보여주는 주자의 독서법을 적극적으로 수용할 필요성을 느꼈을 것이다. 따라서 성리학 계열의 책만을 강조하는 조선중기 도학자들의 가르침을 그대로 수용하기보다는 제자백가서까지 범위를 확대하는 주자 독서론을 수용하였다. 기존의 성리학자들이 주자의 해석 자체를 절대시했다면 18세기 백수는 주자의 본질을 찾아 상대적으로 주체적인 독서 태도를 보여주었다. 백수의 독서법은 18세기 학자들이 기존의 독서전통을 잘 계승하면서도 열린 관점에서 독서 문화를 받아들이고 있었음을 보여준다. 백수의 독서법을 비롯, 고전 독서론에는 오늘날에도 유효한 이론과 방법들이 많다. 고전 독서론을 체계화하여 현대의 독서론에 접맥시키는 작업을 지속적으로 이루어가야 할 것이다.

This study examined the tone and the contents with inspecting closely the reading method of Baeksu Yang eung-su, the 18th`s scholar. Further this checked the current meaning of classic reading theory with contrasting Chosun`s reading theory. After examining Baesu`s reading method, he succeeded the reading theory of Sung Confucianism and received open reading attitude relatively. He told that there was no book which could not read and it was not good to be different on the interpretation of the old books. And he emphasized the self-regulating reading method that studied out of paper than concentrating text without reserve. He had flexible attitude that was different from former reading habit. He said Kwon and Jung that was important on the condition and time. 18th`s new reading conditions needed to read with open minded to Sung Confucianist. At the confusion of old tradition and new reading condition, Baesu worried and needed to receive Juja`s open reading method positively. So He received Juja`s reading theory that enlarge boundary to all classes of philosophers` books than the teaching of Chosun`s moralist that emphasized Sung Confucianism`s book only. The former Sung Confucianist regarded Juja`s interpretation as an absolute theory, but 18th`s Baeksu seeked Juja`s essence and had independent reading attitudes comparatively. Baeksu`s reading method showed that 18th`s scholars succeeded former reading tradition and received reading culture opely. There are many effective theories and methods now in old reading theory including Baesu`s. We have to systematize old reading theory and connect with the present reading theory constantly.
