Oei jukjisa(1795) by Chujae Cho Su-sam is a series of 82 texts of foreign countries, each of which consists of a title -actually the name of a country-, a prose whose content is about nature, customs, products, history etc., of the country, and a hepta-syllabic quatrain or more. One of the most notable characteristics of Oei jukjisa is that it assumes the form of the mixed style of verse and prose. The prosaic descriptions, at a glance, appear explanatory notes, but this study considers them to be a kind of "preface," thereby categorizing Oei jukjisa as "preface-added type" among 6 types of the mixed-style discourses. Chujae composed the Oei jukjisa on the basis of the contents of the Bangyoseungnyak(1610), a book on geography, by Jeong, Baek-i during the Ming dynasty, for the purpose of resolving his regretful feelings caused by the situation in which he could not travel to faraway foreign countries as freely as he wanted. From this fact, we can elicit another characteristics of the discourse, which it is a discourse that embodies a polyphonic structure. As the third characteristic, we can discuss that the Oei jukjisa, no matter whether it is verse part or prose part, is basically categorized as thematic mode in genre. The Oei jukjisa can be highly valued in terms that it shows an open perspective on the foreign culture of a Choson literati of the time, and that it reveals the infant stage of modernity. However, given that the word "Oei" literally means uncivilized or barbaric countries, it is also apparent that Chujae could not rise above the Chinese-oriented way of thinking, that is, considering all other cultures except the Chinese culture to be uncivilized.
