<찬기파랑가>는 기파랑의 찬양을 통해 시대 구원의 문제를 노래한 향가다. 충담사는 기파랑이란 인물 형상을 통해 사회 통합을 추구한다. 이 주제의 구현을 위해 <찬기파랑가>는 월인천강의 형상을 차용한다. 곧 달은 임금, 조약돌은 백성이 된다. 그리고 이 둘을 매개하는 것은 백운으로서의 기파랑이며, 이를 방해하는 것이 먹구름이다. 이것이 <찬기파랑가> 상징체계의 핵심이다. 경덕왕대는 신라중대 전제왕권 대 귀족연합 간의 갈등이 내연하던 시기다. 기파랑은 김기와 일정 정도 동일한 성향을 가진 인물이다. 이 둘은 신라중대 사회의 모순 해소를 통해 국가 통합을 꿈꾼다는 점에서 공통점을 지닌다. <찬기파랑가>는 화랑정신의 복고를 통해 시대 구원을 꿈꾼다는 점에서 당대 지성의 목소리를 담고 있다.

"Ode to Knight Kipa" is an old Korean song which sings for restoring the times by admiring Knight Kipa. "Ode to Knight Kipa" seeks for the unification of a society through the characterization of Knight Kipa and uses the method of the symbolism known as `One moon shines on a thousand river` for it. That is, the moon means the king and the pebble people, which Knight Kipa as the white cloud mediates while the black cloud tries to stop it. This can be said to be the core of the symbolism of "Ode to Knight Kipa." The king Geongduck era was when the absolute monarchy was in discord with the confederate aristocracy. Knight Kipa has something in common with Kim Gi in that both of them dreamt of the unification of a nation by solving the conflict inherent in the middle years of the Silla dynasty. The master Chungdam represents the intellectual voice of the times in that he dreamt of restoring the times through the revival of the Knight spirit.
