이 논문은 김수영 시의 주요한 주제 가운데 하나인 사랑의 의미를 살피는 데 목적을 두었다. 전쟁의 경험과 포로수용소 체험을 통해 김수영은 자유를 지상최대의 의미를 지니는 것으로 생각하게 되지만 당대의 현실은 그로 하여금 자유를 누릴 수 있게 허락하지 않았다. 자유를 추구하는 시인과 자유를 억압하는 당대의 현실 사이의 갈등 속에서 시인은 좌절할 수밖에 없었고, 그 결과로 나타난 것이 설움과 비애의 형식이었다. 그러나 김수영은 현실을 견뎌나가면서 생활을 긍정하고 변화를 용인하는 지혜를 얻게 된다. 사랑의 확인을 통해 그 인식이 확대되고 역사인식에까지 이르게 되는 것이다. 특히 그에게 사랑은 타인을 통해 배우게 되는 수동적인 과정으로 나타난다. 특히 「사랑」과 「현대식교량」에서 두드러지게 나타나듯이 김수영에게 사랑이 의미를 획득하게 되는 과정은 `적극적 수동성`으로 특징지을 수 있었다. 즉, 인격적 주체로서 타인과 만나게 되는 사랑의 확인을 통해 타자와 역사에 대한 새로운 인식을 하게 되는 것이다. 그러한 과정을 통해 성립하는 것이 `사랑의 시학`이라 할 수 있는 것으로, 이것은 `자유의 시학`과 통합되는 지점이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This thesis is written to classify the meaning of the love in Kim, Su Yung`s poems. The love in his poems is the main theme, and his poetics is focused on love. Therefore in this treatise we concentrated on the poems which manages love. The momentous character of his poems of love is that he comes to notice the meaning of love as the positive passivity. In the context of his poems the positive passivity of love means that the self becomes to aware love from the other. As shown in the poems like `love(사랑)`, a modern bridge(현대식 교량)` it seems that Kim comes to learn love when somebody comes to love him. Expressing the process of love as learning he emphases the passivity of love. It means that love is the process somebody loves me and I love him. Therein positive passivity means positivity as well as passivity. The process which Kim comes to learn the meaning of love also means that he comes to perceive the underdevelopment of Korea and realize the true meaning of the freedom. These experiences seemed to make him understand that love and freedom is the one process. And this the point his poetics of love and freedom converges in.
