본 연구의 목적은 지하철 구걸문을 대상으로 텍스트의 기능과 구조를 살피고, 그것에 사용된 전략을 고찰하는데 있다. 본고의 자료는 서울 지하철에서 구걸문을 수집하여 정리한 것이다. 지하철 구걸문이 기본적으로 호소기능을 담당하고 있다는 데 주목하여 그 기능을 달성하기 위해 구걸문은 어떠한 구조를 갖추고 있으며, 어떠한 언어적, 비언어적 전략을 사용하고 있는지 논의하려고 한다. 본고는 겉으로 쉽게 드러나는 신체적 결함을 가지지 않은 구걸자들은 자신의 구걸 행위의 정당성을 확보하는 도구로 구걸문을 사용하는 것으로 이해하였다. 즉 구걸문은 구걸자의 구걸 행위를 합리화하고 구걸 행위에 대한 호소력을 높이는 역할을 할 수 있다. 구걸문의 텍스트성에 기여하는 미시적 구조에서 주목할 것은 여러 응결 장치들을 들 수 있다. 즉 대명사, 지시사 응결 장치, 동일 명사 반복 응결 장치, 동일 명사 반복 회피의 응결 장치, 상위어-하위어 응결 장치를 사용하였다. 구걸문 텍스트에서 거시적 구조의 주제전개는`주의 환기(부름/양해)/구걸 배경/호소/긍정가정(다짐/기원)/인사`의 순서로 일반화할 수 있다. 구걸문 텍스트는 호소력을 높이기 위해 문법적 요소, 어휘적 요소, 문체적 요소 등의 언어적 호소 전략과 구걸 행위에 수반되는 행위로서의 비언어적 호소 전략이 나타난다. 본 연구는 실생활에서 접할 수 있는 모든 텍스트가 언어 연구의 대상이 될 수 있다는 입장에서 구걸문을 텍스트 언어학의 틀에서 논의하였고, 구걸문의 다양한 언어학적, 사회문화적 특성을 찾아내어 호소 텍스트의 특성에 맞게 기술하고 설명하려 하였다.

This study aims to analyze several typical features of "panhandler text." This paper is based on materials collected from text documents handed out by panhandlers in the Seoul Metro subway system. I would like to discuss how "panhandler texts" are structured in order to function as an appeal, and how verbal and non-verbal strategies are used. It is understood that beggars who are not visibly physically disabled use "panhandler texts" as a tool to secure validation for their begging. Therefore "panhandler texts" rationalize the act of panhandling and serve to make the act of panhandling more appealing. This paper is also investigating the Micro and Macro structures of the "panhandler texts". The Micro structure of the texts has the characteristic of having cohesion with other constituents in the next clause and sentence. The devices of cohesion are anaphora, dexis, and repetition of the same nouns. The devices connect the presentational words. The Macro structure of the texts has the following general order: [attention (calling/ under-standing)]-[explaining of beggar reason]-[appealing to the people]- [assumption(promise/blessing)]-[greeting]. "Panhandler texts" contain verbal strategies such as grammar, lexicon, and style and non-verbal strategies such as behavior in order to strongly appeal to the public. This article took the stance that texts that are used in every day life can be objects of linguistics studies, and discussed "panhandler texts" within the frame of linguistics. Furthermore it tried to explain the characteristics of "appealing texts" by finding out the various linguistic and socio-cultural features of "panhandler texts".
