주요한의 「日本近代詩抄⑴·⑵」(1919)와 황석우의 「日本詩壇의 二大傾向一」(1920)은 조선의 문학이 일본 상징주의 시, 나아가 근대 자유시 형성 과정을 거울로 삼아, 조선의 근대시 형성의 가능성을 모색하는 가운데 발표되었다. 이 두 편의 번역을 검토하는 일은 주요한과 황석우가 일본의 시인들 가운데에서 누구의 어떤 작품을 선택하여 번역하고 소개했는가를 통해, 그들의 일본 상징주의 문학을 어떻게 이해하고 있었는지는 물론이거니와, 나아가 시를 통해 `근대` 혹은 `문명`을 향한 자기 발견과 자기 성장의 비전을 탐색하는 가운데, 일본의 상징주의 문학이 조선의 문학청년들에게 무엇을 시사했는지를 이해하는 계기가 된다. 그리고 이 두 편의 번역, 특히 기타하라 하쿠슈[北原白秋 1885-1942] 작품의 번역은, 일본의 상징주의 문학이 조선의 문학청년들이 반드시 창작의 과정에서 체현해야 할 상징주의 시, 나아가 근대시의 중요한 요소를 시사했다고 하겠다. 또한 이러한 번역은 프랑스 상징주의와는 다른 세기말을 체험했던 일본 상징주의 시인을 통해, 서구의 문학적 사유와 자국의 문학적 수사와 형식을 어떻게 조화시킬 것이며, 나아가 조선의 문학청년들에게 자신이 처한 세계와 삶과 어떻게 대면할 것인가, 어떻게 자기의 진정성을 발견하고 자율성을 실천할 것인가 하는 과제를 남겨주었다고 하겠다.

Ju, Yo-han`s `Anthology of Modern Japanese poetryⅠ·Ⅱ`(1919) and Hwang, Suk-Uh`s `Two trends of Japanese poet societyⅠ`(1920) are presented while seek an possibility of modern korean poetry in Chosun. In these two texts, aspect of Ju and Hwang`s selection about Japanese poetry suggest their understanding of Japanese symbolism. and the meaning of Japanese symbolism to chosun poets who search for the self-discovery, the vision of buildung. especially translation of Kitahara Hakushu(1885～1942)`s poem imply very important elements of symbolism, modern poetry to chosun poets. moreover this translation leave a problems to chosun poets, such as how to conciliate between literary thought of the west and rhetoric, literary form of ones own country, how to confront the world and their own life, how to discover self-authenticity, and how to practice aesthetic independence.
