본고는 백석이 1939년말 만주 신경으로 이주하여 지은 작품이 그 이전 시기의 작품과 다른 새로운 면모를 보이고 있는 점을 천착하기 위해 쓰였다. 연구를 진행하는 데 있어 백석에 대한 역사·전기적, 심리적 고찰은 지양하고 주로 동시대 사회·문화적 지형을 살펴 백석과 그의 작품이 가지는 의미와 의의를 논구하고자 하였다. 일제에 의해 만주국이 수립된 이후 일제는 `오족협화`와 `왕도낙토`의 이데올로기를 앞세워 일본인과 조선인의 만주 이주를 정책적으로 장려하였다. 1930년대 중·후반이 되면 많은 조선인 지식인, 작가들은 일제가 조장한 이데올로기에 포섭되어 만주를 `개척`과 `갱생`의 공간으로 상정하였다. 이때 수많은 개척지 답사기와 작품이 쓰였는데, 그들의 글에서 만주인(중국인)들의 주체성, 역사와 생활은 무시되고 그저 개척되어야 할 자연(사물)에 불과한 것이 되었다. 당시 많은 조선인 작가들이 만주를 통해 피식민자로서의 처지를 잊고 의사제국주의자의 시선을 보유했던 것이다. 동시대에 백석은 앞과 같은 전반적인 분위기와는 확연히 다른 시작품을 창출한다. 그는 유구함의 가치를 주목하고 `게으름`이 갖는 의미를 옹호한다. 그리고 `넋`을 지키고 조선인의 `혼`을 붙잡기 위해 고통을 감내해야 한다고 말하는데, 그것은 하늘이 부여한 `시인`으로서의 운명을 자각하고 수락하는 것이기도 하였다. 또한 백석은 그의 작품에서 동시대 많은 조선인 작가들이 일제에 포섭된 의사제국주의자의 시선을 가졌던 것과는 다른 태도를 견지한다. 당시 만주관련 글을 쓴 대부분의 조선인 논자는 일본과 조선 사이에 개재되어 있던 제국과 식민, 근대와 비근대를 기반으로 하는 우월과 열등의 차이를 `만주`라는 공간에서는 조선인과 만주인(중국인)의 관계로 치환하였다. 반면에 백석은 중국인들의 일상적이고 사소한 행위, 민속 등을 주목하고 그들의 오랜 역사적 입장을 헤아리며 행위의 근본 심성을 존중하였다. 나아가 스스럼없이 공감하고 참여하기도 하였다.
This paper has been written to introspect Baek Seok`s poetry composed after his immigration into Manchuria in 1939. It has been studied by the considering of socio-cultural basement at that time. A lot of Korean writers were inclined to follow Japanese imperialist`s ideology as like `the Greater East Asia Co-Properity Sphere`. They thought Manchuria was the place where poor korean people could find a new life through clearing the barbarian nature. They might be said to become mock-imperialists from the condition governed by Japan staying in Korea when they imagined or visited Manchuria. It meant they ignored Manchurian people and their life. On the other hand, Back Seok showed quite different attitude and wrote different poems compared to most writers around 1940. He respected Manchurian`s daily and detailed life and tried to understand the original meaning of their custom and tradition. The reason that he wasn`t seized by Japanese imperialists` ideology was because he had kept the distance from it. Also, Baek Seok showed us that he realized the fate of a poet and accepted it willingly. He urged korean people had to endure their pain for keeping `Korean soul`. He also noticed the value of the historical custom and laziness when most korean intellects and writers liked following modernization and speed.
