이 논문은 국가의 개념이 싹 뜨고 제국주의에 맞서 `민족주의`가 근대와 함께 다가온 20세기 초, 근대계몽기 이후 Korean language로서 `한국어`의 여러 명칭이 어떻게 변화하였으며, 언어 환경의 변화에 따라 역사적 시기마다 Korean language의 명칭이 지니고 있었던 의미를 사회언어사적 관점에서 역사적으로 탐색하고 아울러 그 명칭의 미래는 어떻게 전개되어야 하는지에 대하여 살펴보고자 하는 의도를 가지고 있다. 우선 본문 서두에서는 한·중·일 `국어` 명칭의 기원과 차용에 대한 언급을 통해서 `국어`의 등장에 대하여 언급했으며, 그 이후의 논의 전개는 근대계몽기, 일제강점기, 해방 공간, 한국 전쟁 이후로 나눠 Korean language의 명칭 위상 변천에 대하여 살펴보았다. 근대계몽기 는 `조선어`의 종말과 `국어`의 등장을 알아보았고, 일제강점기는 `조선어`와 `국어`의 여러 시선을 구체적으로 살펴보았다. 해방 이후 남북의 분단으로 인한 `조선어`의 균열을 `한국어(국어)`와 `조선어`의 양립으로 설정해 보았으며, 한국 전쟁 후 시기는 남한을 중심으로 `국어`와 `한국어`의 구축과 성장으로 바라보고자 했다. 결론적으로 이러한 Korean language의 위상 변천은 `한국어`명칭의 강화와 구축으로 귀결된 측면을 용인하되, 그것은 과도기적 명칭일 가능성이 높다고 판단했으며, 한국어의 미래 명칭이 `우리말(Urimal)`로 정착되어야 한다는 입장을 취하고자 했다. 따라서 한국어와 조선어의 통합으로서의 `우리`를 기반으로 한 `우리말(urimal)`은 `국가주의`에 종속된 `국어`보다, 국적에 매몰된 `한국어`보다 더 유연한 Korean language의 미래 명칭일 수 있다는 점을 향후 남북의 통일과 연관해 고민해 보고자 했다.

The thesis of the Korean language name is to look at historical changes and their meaning. Korean language names has been changing variety for the last 100 years. Korean names in the name of traditional languages, with the fall of the Joseon Dynasty, the position was upgraded. The name was the national language(국어). However, through the Japanese era, the national language was Japanese. On the other hand, the Korean language(Joseon-eo) was just the dialect of the Korean peninsula at the time, regardless of the will of the Korean people. This meant a reduction in the level of that names. After liberation in 1945, the Korean language of the name was restored to the national language. The national language was divided into North and South Korean name, along with the division of Korea. It has prompted the birth of abnormal Korean in the name of the Korean language(Joseon-eo) in Japan and China. The Korean name(Hanguk-eo) has the power today. Korean language should be the name of Korean reunification (Urimal) with the reunification of the country. It is the primary task for the language of unification.
