김동인의 「감자」에서 서사적 재현과 당대의 사회적 현실의 관련성을 해명하는 일종의 문학사회학이 이 글의 목적이다. 한마디로 「감자」의 사회학은 교환의 사회학이라고 할 수 있다. 소설의 주인공 복녀는 우선 근대적 이동성의 네트워크를 활용하는 분별력 있는 기회주의자로서 왕서방과의 만남에서 교환가치를 창출하고, 이것을 벼락출세의 계기로 만든다. 그러나 그 이동성이 동반하는 불만의 내면성에 휘말리게 되면서 복녀의 마음에 드리워지기 시작한 열정의 그림자는 기회주의를 거부하고 교환을 중지하게 함으로써 그녀가 교환의 세계로부터 배척당하게 되는 결정적인 순간이 되고 만다. 다시 말해 냉정한 상인의 세계에서 준수되어야 하는 교환의 규칙은 분별력을 잃고 상혼을 상실한 복녀의 불만스럽고 불안한 내면성 속에서 망각되고, 결국 복녀는 세 남자의 교섭 과정을 통해 곧바로 교환의 세계로부터 추방되는 것이다. 이것이 소위 `교환의 사회학`이라고 부를 수 있는 것의 결과인데, 여기서 `개인의 형성과 사회화의 분열`은 자명해진다. 이때 문학사적으로 부각되는 것은, 교환의 사회학을 통해 이광수의 총체성은 하나의 환상임이 폭로된다는 점이다. 요컨대 이광수는 자신의 소설에서 자기존중의 낭만적 열정과 사회화의 요구라는 현실적 이해관계 사이에서 조화로운 해결책을 찾았다고 확신했지만, 마침내 김동인은 「감자」에서 개인을 지지하면서도 사회를 지탱할 수 있다는 근대적 사회화에 대한 계몽주의적 확신이 붕괴되었다는 사실을 확인시켜 준다. 결국 김동인의 「감자」는 근대적 생활의 어떤 특별한 순간들이 `상인`이 지배하는 비속한 교환의 세계 속으로 빨려 들어가버리는 사회역사적 과정을 아주 상징적인 방식으로 재현하는 셈이다.

The goal of this writing is a kind of literary sociology which makes clear the relationship between narrative representation and social actuality of present generation in Kim, Dong-in`s < KamJa >. In a word, the sociology in < KamJa > is sociology of exchange. First of all, Heroine of the novel, Bok-nyeo is the sensitive opportunist who make the best use of the mobility which applies the modern network. Namely, she creates exchange value from meeting with Wang-seobang, which she makes with opportunity of sudden success. But as she is drifted into the internality of dissatisfaction where accompanies the mobility, her heart becomes involved with the shadow of passion. And when she refused an opportunism and discontinued the exchange, she was removed from the world of exchange. In other word, it is the rule of exchange which must be observed from the world of calm merchant that is forgotten in the insecure and dissatisfactory internality of Bok-nyeo who loses a sensitive power and a salesmanship. After all, Bok-nyeo is expelled at once from the world of exchange by a exchange process of three men. This is result of what is called as would-be `a sociology of exchange`. From here, the disruption between formation of individuals and socialization becomes self-evident. At this point, it is embossed with literary history that Lee, Gwang-su`s totality is exposed as a fantasy by a sociology of exchange.
