이 글의 목적은 `아기(?兒, 幼兒)`의 어원으로 인식하고 있는 `아지`의 차자표기에 대해 고찰하고 그 문제점을 파악하는 데 있다. 지금까지의 연구에서 `영아, 유아`를 의미하는 `아기`의 어원은 `아지`로 파악했다. 이러한 논의의 근거는 `아지`의 차자표기에 사용된 `-知, -智, -只, -之` 등의 한자음이 [지]라고 보았기 때문이다. 이러한 이유로 `아기`의 어원이 `아지`라는 것에 대해 그동안 이견이 제시되지 않았다. 그러나 `아기`의 어원이 `아지`라는 의견은 인지언어학적인 관점, 음운론적인 관점, 한자음 변화상에서 살펴 볼 때, 많은 문제점을 지니고 있다. 또한 고려시대 문헌에서의 `아기, 아가`의 차자표기와의 관련성을 볼 때, 더욱 그러하다. 본고는 이 문제점에 주목하여 이 연구는 지금까지 `아기`의 어원이 `아지`라는 의견의 제문제점을 고찰하고 오히려 `아기`에서 `아지`가 분파되었을 가능성을 논하고 입증하고자 하였다. 우선 `-知, -智, -只, -之`의 고대국어 시기의 음가가 [지]가 아님을 증명하기 위하여 중국 상고음에서 이들 漢字의 독음을 고찰하였다. 또한 고대국어 자료를 통해 이 漢字들의 독음이 [지]가 아닌 [기]에 가까운 것을 입증하였다. 또한 중세국어시기의 `아기`의 차자표기도 `아지`가 아닌 `아기`임을 확인하였다. 이러한 논의들은 `아기`의 어원이 `아지`가 아님을 입증하는 것이다.

The aim of this paper is to consider `A-ci` which is understood the origin of an A-ki and identify these issues in Sino-Korean on Ancient Korean under the loan-word transcription system of Korean. Because the sound of `-知, -智, -只, -之` in Sino-Korean on Ancient Korean under the loan-word transcription system of Korean has been comprehended [ci], the research so far in the etymology of `A-ki(baby)` has grasped that `A-ci` is the etymology of `A-ki and a different view has not been introduced. However, the research about he etymology of `A-ki has several points on cognitive linguistics and phonology with the diachrony of Sino sounds. Also, under the loan-word transcription system of Korean of `A-ki` and `A-ci` on Koryeo prove that the research is wrong. This paper takes notice of these issues and try to discuss and establish the possibility that `A-ci` branches from `A-ki`. To do this, we inquire into the sounds of `-知, -智, -只, -之` on Ancient Chinese and verify that their sound are closed to [ki] not [ci]. Futhermore, we authenticate that their sound are closed to [ki] not [ci] in Sino-Korean on Ancient Korean under the loan-word transcription system of Korean with comparing the example of `-知, -智, -只, -之` with the sounds of characters those can be replaced with them on documents in the Ancient Korean period. The facts we discussed above show that the `A-ci` is not the etymology of `A-ki` and `A-ki` is the etymology of `A-ci` on the contrary.
