본 논문에서는 한글 편지를 중심으로 순원왕후의 정치적 지향에 대해 논의하였다. 순원왕후는 헌종과 철종 2대에 걸쳐 수렴청정을 하면서 19세기 안동 김씨의 세도정치를 열어간 인물로 알려져 있다. 하지만 한글 편지에 나타난 순원왕후의 정치적 역할은 왕실의 유지와 위상의 강화에 중점이 놓여 있었다. 편지에는 순원왕후가 수렴청정 기간 동안 백성에게 관심을 가지고 연민으로 대하고 있으며 지방의 문제를 해결하기 위해 인재를 등용하는 모습이 나타난다. 그리고 홍삼 무역과 관련하여 개성의 인삼 재배 백성을 보호하기 위해 潛商을 금하는 등의 적극적인 행동을 보이기도 한다. 또한 철종이 왕으로서 역할을 다할 수 있도록 교육을 중시하면서, 철종이 영조의 혈맥을 이었다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 아울러 이전 왕들의 왕릉을 옮겨가면서까지 왕실의 권위를 높이기 위해 노력하고 있다. 물론 이러한 논의는 순원왕후 자신의 목소리를 근거로 한 것이기에, 자료 자체가 편향되어 있다. 하지만 바로 이 점 때문에, 기존의 역사적 자료와 다른 균열이 드러날 수 있다고 판단된다. 따라서 이를 보다 적극적으로 해석한다면, 이후 순원왕후와 19세기를 보다 입체적으로 바라볼 수 있는 계기가 되리라 기대할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study was to examine Queen Soonwon`s letters written in Hangul in an attempt to discuss her political orientations. Queen Soonwon administered state affairs from behind the veil on behalf of two kings, King Heonjong and King Cheoljong, and she is famous for letting the Kims of Andong exercise power in the 19th century. According to her Hangul letters, however, her political roles primarily aimed at the maintenance of the royal family and bolstering the status of it. The letters of Queen Soonwon showed that she cared about the people and felt pity for them during her Sooryeomcheongjeong, and that she engaged men of ability to iron out local problems. She was aggressive in protecting those who cultivated ginseng in Gaeseong by prohibiting the illegal trade of ginseng steamed red. And she attached importance to education so that King Cheoljong could pull his weight as a king, and she stressed that he was a descendent of King Youngjo. It could be inferred from her Hangul letters that she wanted to strengthen the authority of the Joseon royal family and to maintain the orthodoxy of it, as its authority was gradually on the wane in the 19th century. Therefore it could be said that Queen Soonwon tried to protect the royal family as the top leader of the nation while she maintained a politically collaborative relationship with the Kims of Andong, which was her maiden home. She published Eonhaebon and directed her energy into education as a member of the royal family. It seemed that she kept in mind that she was among the female members of the royal family, and the fact she strived to heighten the status of the royal family seemed to result from that.
