이주의 세기라는 시대정신에 비추어서 이 글은 한국의 다문화 정책과 정체성 변화를 위해, 일찍부터 다문화사회였던 서양의 다문화 이론을 분석하고 공동체주의를 표방하는 한국사회에 적실한 통찰력을 얻는 데 목표를 둔다. 다문화주의와 상호문화주의로 대별하는 다문화 이론은 지평 차이에도 불구하고 자유주의와 개인주의를 전제하기 때문에, 한국의 공동체주의와 합치하지 않는 면이 있다. 우리 사회에 적실하게 적용하려면, 다문화 이론이 전제하는 자유주의가 탈자유주의 내지 공동체주의와 혼종성을 지닌다는 것을 논증해야 한다. 반대로, 공동체주의를 고수하는 한국에도 혼밥 문화 같은 개인화된 삶이 보편화되면서 관습과 인륜이 해체되고, 정체성을 분류하기 어려운 `애매한 정체성`이 나타나면서 왈쩌가 분석하는 미국적 현상과 유사해진다. 그래서 이 글은 이주자집단과 문화갈등 및 정체성 혼란을 일으키는 한국사회에 다문화 이론이 어떻게 소개되고, 어떤 방향으로 나아갈지를 자유주의와 탈자유주의의 혼종성, 공동체주의와 탈공동체주의 혼종성을 통해 성찰한다. 한국의 다문화 현상은 동화와 배제의 역학 가운데서 복합적 정체성, 혼종적 개인성을 형성하고 있다. 다양한 혼종성이 고립과 배제라는 자기 파괴적 양상으로 나아가지 않도록 상호대화와 상호인정이라는 쌍방향, 다방향적 개방성을 견지하고, 타자가 나의 내적 계기라는 존재론적 중층성을 인정하면서 상호문화성과 상호정체성을 현실화하는 대안이 필요하다. 다문화주의에 상호문화성을 도입하여 한국적 역사와 풍토에서 나오는 혼종적 정체성과 개인성을 가늠해 본다.
Korean society in 21th century has changed into a multicultural society. But Korean has holden a single language and national identity as a racially homogeneous nation that pursues communitarianism and community. On the contrary, individualism has spreaded in Korean nowadays. Korean society goes through a lot of troubles and pain between Korean culture and several cultures of immigrant groups as like migrant workers and marriage migrants. This essay researches the phenomenons of Korean multicultural society and suggests a method and theory to overcome their troubles. First, this essay explains the basics and limits of the Western multiculturalism and interculturalism. Secondly, because two theories are on the premise of liberalism and individualism, I strive to find that liberalism has a hybridity with hyper-liberalism and anti-liberalism as a communitarianism. Third, it needs to justify that communitarianism has a hybridity with liberalism. Eventually, the hybridity between communitarianism with liberalism has influenced Korean identity to form various complex identities and different hybrid personalities. So, if we don`t want to trample upon human rights of immigrants and if we want to overcome the dynamics of exclusion of minority races from Korean society and national identity, we must strive to take an interaction and mutual recognition. The key to get such aims is making up for the weak points in multiculturalism by use of intercultural identity as like mutually duplicated identities.
