본 논문은 장용학의 후기 소설 「山房夜話」에 나타난 탈국가 욕망을 살펴본 것이다. 이 작품은 전두환 정권기인 1982년 일본의 역사교과서왜곡 사건에 대한 장용학의 문학적 대응이다. 일본의 교과서왜곡은 배타적인 근대 국가(민족)주의에서 기인한다. 그런데 장용학은 이미 일찍부터 민족주의의 폐쇄성과 국가의 억압성을 비판해 왔으며, 이는 후기 작품에서도 지속된다. 이 작품에서 반국가(민족)주의는 다음과 같이 나타난다. 한편 진우는 일본의 국가(민족)주의가 만들어낸 역사의 허구성을 밝히고, 천황제가 철저하게 인간을 노예화하고 있음을 밝힌다. 다른 한편, 그는 한글전용정책과 이를 뒷받침하는 이념인 한국의 민족주의를 비판한다. 이를 통해 일본과 한국 모두는 국가(민족)주의에 의해 허구와 왜곡을 일삼아 왔음을 보여준다. 결말에서 장용학은 모든 인물들이 국가(민족)주의의 허구성을 깨닫고 `비국민`이 되도록 함으로써 국가(민족)를 벗어나고자 하는 욕망을 소설로 실현시키고 있다.

This paper examines a post-national desire in Jang Yong Hak`s later novel, San-bang-ya-hwa, which was written in response to Japan`s distortion of history textbook in 1982. Japan`s manipulation of history is rooted in its exclusive nationalism. Since the beginning of his career, Jang Yong Hak had criticized the exclusiveness and oppression that nationalism and modern nations could have generated, and his critique continued into his later works. Jang Yong Hak represents his anti-nationalism in the novel, specifically in two aspects. First, he reveals the ways in which Japanese nationalism generates the fabrication of history and how thoroughly the emperor system enslaves people. Second, he criticizes both the Hangeul-Only Policy and Korean nationalism underlying the policy. Drawing on nationalism, the writer argues, both Korea and Japan manipulate their people and distort their history. Jang Yong Hak projects onto the end of the novel his desire that all the people become non-nationals freeing themselves from nationalism and nation-state.
