Samuel Beckett reflects his philosophical thoughts which include absurdity and existentialism in his plays. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Beckett deals with the problems of human existence and the meaninglessness through his own ways in Endgame. His characters try to struggle with and find themselves in meaningless world which is filled with absurd situation. He represents absurd situation of reality and human`s despair as the concept of play. Beckett suggests human`s tragic life by describing meaninglessness and absurd reality. Characters identify their existence through the devices of conflict, competition, and continuous gestures in Endgame because Beckett intended to make audiences realize absurdity by using them. The effect of repetition makes audiences realize the usual life which has no change and conflicts between Hamm and Clov in Endgame. Without doubt, these devices are effective for audiences to identify the absurd reality concretely because Beckett wants audiences to interpret his work from various views, and tries to have distance from his work. In other words, he focuses on meaningless existence human faces in Endgame. After all, Beckett`s excellent achievement is the use of various techniques for expressing absurd environmental in his work. (Anyang University)
