This study aims to examine the subject consciousness which appeared in the poems of Kim Hoyeonjae. Specifically, this approach is focused on the elements of the subject consciousness, which are `alienation`, `desire`, and `fantasy` on the basis of the concepts elaborated by Jacques Lacan`s Psychoanalysis. In the discussion of the subject, however, it is necessary to consider the poet`s subject consciousness from the viewpoint of feminism assuming that Kim Hoyeonjae was a woman oppressed by the male dominant culture. First, the isolation of the subject, seen in the poems of Kim Hoyeonjae, is the process of alienation in which the subject is formed in the Other (of the Symbolic). The `room` in the poem symbolizes the `life of woman` who is besieged by the patriarchal ideology in terms of its closing nature. The mechanism of loss that she gave up her dreams that had been long under pressure of the patriarchal society activates the isolation of the subject. The poem presents the subject consciousness to express the anger about the age by identifying `I` with a lunatic. `Peach blossoms` and `pear blossoms` in the poem of Kim Hoyeonjae represent female sexuality. The clause that "The peach blossoms fall, and the flower scent is fragrant" is the manifestation of the fullness of sexual desire. However, the poem reveals the resistance to the oppression of the times in that it secretly expresses the feminine desire that can not be expressed in reality while describing the spring of the flower in the deep and desolate mountain. In the poem, "the three-ja (the Korean foot) sword" stands for the consciousness of the `woman` who fiercely resists the dichotomous hierarchy of phallocentrism/rationalism. Meanwhile, the movement of water and cloud originating from the top of the high mountain implies a desire for `leaving` of the poetic subject. It expresses the desire to escape from the patriarchal `house` and the male-dominated society through the fantasy of `alter ego` produced in the poems. The poetic subject creates the stage of fantasy when the sea and the beach all turn into bloody red. The images that gives mythical fantasy to nature contain the earnest desire of the poet who wants to go home. The subject consciousness as a `woman` in the poems reveals the hidden frustration in the unconsciousness and the loss (the lack of being) of `woman` and exposes negative elements of `male` value to the world, and it shows the strong will of resistance to the patriarchal system.
