본고는 아동을 대상으로 한 위안부 소재 작품을 통해 위안부 문제의 본질을 규명한 것이다. 위안부 문제는 역사문제, 법적문제, 인권문제 등 여러 가지가 착종된 것이다. 국제법상으로 보면, 전쟁범죄, 인신매매, 강제노동 등 중대하고 복잡한 문제를 담지하고 있다. 이런 측면에서 일본군 위안부 문제는 우리만의 과제가 아니라 전 세계적으로 관심을 기울이고 해결해야 할 사안이기도 하다. 전쟁의 피해는 가장 약한 어린이와 성에 노출된 여성들이다. 또한 제국주의적 폭력은 강자 중심으로 흐르는 세계 평화의 위협으로 치환된다. 그러므로 위안부 문제는 한국과 일본 간의 역사에만 머무르지 않고 전 세계 모두의 문제이며, 현재뿐 아니라 미래를 잇는 중요한 사안이다. 즉, 위안부 문제는 위안부 피해 할머니들만의 것이 아니라 우리 모두, 나아가 전 세계의 문제인 것이다. 사실, 그동안 정신대책협의회가 위안부 문제를 이슈화하고 우리 사회에 부각시켜왔다. 이를 통해 우리는 전시여성의 인권과 폭력 문제에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 그러나 이들의 노력에도 불구하고 위안부 피해 문제는 그리 진전되지 않았다. 특히, 아동들에게 위안부 문제는 더욱 금기시하고 있다. 하지만 민감한 내용이기 때문에 숨기고 부끄러운 역사이기 때문에 외면한다면, 미래의 주역인 아동들은 올바른 역사관을 갖기 힘들다. 이런 측면에서 본 연구는 과거의 역사가 아닌 미래의 역사를 위해, 아동들에게 올바른 역사교육이 무엇인지를 생각하게 한다.
