이 논문은 김석범의 대하소설 『화산도』를 망명자 문학이라는 관점에서 살펴본 것이다. 『화산도』와 망명의 관계를 구체적으로 살펴보기 위해서 다음 세 가지의 문제틀을 설정했다. 첫째, 재일조선인문학과 망명문학의 관계를 살펴봄으로써 『화산도』를 망명문학이라기보다는 망명자의 문학으로 위치 지었다. 둘째, 『화산도』에 나타난 북한에 대한 비판의 궤적을 추적함으로써 김석범의 망명의 궤적을 밝혔다. 셋째, 『화산도』에 나타난 `망명`과 관련된 부분을 남승지의 망명 의식을 통해 구체적으로 분석했다. 이를 통해서 『화산도』의 창작 과정을 남북 모두의 체제로부터 이탈해 독자적인 사상을 형성해가는 과정으로 파악했다. 김석범이 『화산도』를 조선어에서 일본어로 다시 쓰는 과정은 자의가 아닌 타의에 의해 남과 북 모두로부터 사상적인 `망명`을 해가는 과정이었다고 할 수 있다.

This research seeks to investigate Kim Seokbeom`s “Vocano Island” as a literature written by the exile writer. In this article, I examine connection between “Vocano Island” and exile by considering three main aspects. First, I examine Kim Seokbeom`s “Vocano Island” by focusing on the writer`s exile. Second, by analyzing the writer`s trajectory of criticism against North Korea, I endeavor to show how it appears in “Vocano Island”. Third, I analyze Japanese Korean`s exile in the text through Nam Seungji`s sense of exile. Through the process of the above analyses, I situate “Vocano Island” which was separated from the system not only North Korean but also South Korea. Thus it is not difficult to say that rewriting of “Vocano Island” from Korean to Japanese is also a process of committing the ideological asylum both South Korean and North Korea.
