한국어 교육에서 비언어적 표현은 언어적 표현 이상으로 중요한 교육요소이다. 비언어적 표현은 의사소통 상황에서 언어적 메시지를 대신하거나 보완하는 기능을 담당하면서 효율적인 의사소통이 가능하게 하는 역할을 한다. 이러한 비언어적 표현은 한 사회의 구성원들이 본능적으로 체득하여 서로 공유하는 행동 양식으로, 언어 공동체의 규범과 문화적 관습을 반영하며 구현된다. 때문에 외국인 학습자에게는 의도적인 학습이 필요한 부분이다. 만일 제대로 교육이 이루어지지 않으면 갈등과 오해를 유발할 수 있고, 성공적인 의사소통에 실패할 수밖에 없다. 이제까지 한국어 교육에서는 비언어적 표현 교육에 대한 중요성을 인식하면서도 문법 중심의 언어 능력 향상에만 몰두한 나머지 비언어적표현 교육은 소홀하게 여겨 온 측면이 있다. 학습자의 의사소통 능력을 신장하고 이문화 간 소통을 증진하기 위해서 구체적이고 실질적인 교수-학습 방안을 모색하는 노력이 필요한 시점이다. 이에 본 연구는 비언어적 표현 교육에 대한 필요성을 역설하고, 기존연구들과 교재 분석을 통해 현재 한국어 교육에서 진행되는 비언어적표현 교육의 현황을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 외국인 학습자들이 알아야 하는 비언어적 표현에 대해 한국 문화적 특성에 기반하여 신체, 접촉, 시선, 자세, 침묵과 관련된 상징적 행위를 중심으로 지식적 측면의 교육 내용을 제시하였다. 실천적 측면으로 교실 현장에서 학습자 주도의 상황 중심 역할극을 활용한 새로운 교수-학습 방법을 모색하였다.

In the Korean language education, the non-verbal expression is an important educational element beyond the verbal expression. The non-verbal expression may work on behalf of the linguistic message under the communication situations or take the supplementary function to enable efficient communication. Such non-verbal expression is the behavioral form that the constituents of a society to acquire instinctively to share with each other that it reflects and realizes the norm and cultural customs of verbal community. Because of this attribute, it is the part that requires intended learning for foreign learners. If appropriate education is not made, it may cause conflicts and misunderstandings and ultimately fails in successful communication. In the Korean language education to this point, the focus has been on improving the linguistic capability around the grammar while recognizing the importance on the non-verbal expression education that is has certain aspect of neglecting the non-verbal expression education. In order to enhance the communication capability of learners and promote communication in different cultures, it is required to have the effort to seek for detailed and practical teaching-learning plan. Therefore, this study has stressed the needs on the non-verbal expression education and analyzed existing studies and teaching materials to take a look at the status of the non-verbal expression education that is currently processed in the Korean language education. On this basis, with respect to the non-verbal expression that the foreign learners should know, new teaching - learning method has sought by presenting the same in the aspect of knowledge aspect based on the characteristics of Korean culture and proposal of role-play based on the situations that may be facilitated in the field of classroom.
