This paper studies “emotion” in short story of Maeilsinbo in the 1910s. Conventional discussions have largely concentrated on the overall characteristics of “short novels subscribed” and on the types of persons, materials, and themes it covered. This study aims for more precise understanding of each text. For this, this paper will perform two major analyses centered on “emotion” in short narratives in the 1910s. Chapter 2 will show how “drinking, adult entertainment, and gambling” combined with the “narrative of a family ruin.” At that time, the police enforced laws against gamblers and vagrants and the press continuously censured the fallen, as shown in the article on page 3 of Maeilsinbo. However, such transgressions did not disappear easily, and this study evaluates the reasons for this in terms of “pleasure.” In other words, desire for “drinking, sex, and gambling” was regarded as one “structure of emotion”, and the “community of emotion” was analyzed as being formed to share this “pleasure.” In Chapter 3, the trials of achieving the goal of “enlightenment” through the formation of new “pleasures” are evaluated. First, the logic of “accomplishing academic achievement” to escape from “barbarism” was proposed. Then, narrative of the accumulation of wealth was proposed. Finally, a “mental revolution” was proposed. This followed the logic of creating “people” proper to “new pleasures” by changing “emotion.” However, a significant portion of vitality derived from conventional “pleasure” disappears in describing a new form of “pleasure.” Based on the above discussion, the characteristics of “emotional” reactions may be confirmed from short narratives of Maeilsinbo.
