이 글은 최서해 소설의 문화정치적 의미를 살펴보려는 시도이다. 이를 위해 행복이라는 매개를 경유한다. 1920년대 행복이라는 개념은 정치와 문화의 영역을 횡단하며 유통되었다. 정치의 영역에서 행복은 일본의 통치를 비판하는 논리로 사용되었으며, 문화의 영역에서 행복은 선과 양심의 가치를 통해 획득해야 것이 되었다. 이러한 맥락에서 신경향파 시기 최서해 소설은 가족에 대한 인식을 통해 불행의 전환을 목표로 한다. 사적 영역이라고 할 수 있는 가족의 불행은 자기의 양심을 고양시켜서 스스로를 공적 영역에 참여하려는 주체로 거듭나게 한다. 이 과정에서 드러나는 공포나 파국의 상상력은 불행의 전환, 즉 행복을 쟁취하려는 시도이다. 이러한 그의 시도는 1920년대 후반의 작품에서는 돈과 양심의 경계에서 공감과 부끄러움의 감정을 표현하는 방향으로 나아간다. 이전의 작품이 불행의 전환을 위해 비현실적 상황을 마련한 것이었다면, 말년의 작품은 문화와 정치의 논리가 경제적인 것(돈)으로 환원되는 현실에 대응할 수 있는 실천의 계기를 주체의 내면에서 마련하고자 한 것이다. 최서해 소설에 나타난 마르크스주의의 핵심은 여기에 있는 것이다.

This article examines the cultural and political meanings of Seo-Hye Choi`s novels. For this, the author uses happiness as a theme. The concept of happiness has been used throughout the fields of politics and culture. Happiness in the field of politics was used as a basis for criticizing Japanese rule, and happiness in the field of culture was obtained through the values of the good and conscience. In this context, Seo-Hye Choi`s novels in the period of the New Tendency Group aim to transform misfortune through the awareness of family. Families`misfortunes, which can be seen in the private sphere, became a subject that participates in the public sphere by improving people`s conscience. The fear and imagination of collapse revealed by this process is an attempt to achieve happiness, the transformation of misfortune. His attempt presents the emotions of empathy and shame on the boundary between money and conscience in his work in the late 1920s. His previous work created unrealistic situations to transform misfortune, while his late work provided the opportunity for actions that can respond to reality, turning the logic of culture and politics into an economic thing (money).
