본고는 부사 파생 접미사 `-이/-히`의 표기에 대한 한글 맞춤법 제51항에 대하여 한글 맞춤법의 전체적인 태도 혹은 관점에서 이를 어떻게 해석해야 하는가에 대한 논의라 할 수 있다. 부사 파생 접미사 `-이/-히`의 표기에 관한 맞춤법 규정은 그 표기를 직관상 `-이/-히` 중 하나로 결정하기가 쉽지 않다는 문제와, 그 규정이 `한글 맞춤법은 표준어를 소리대로 적되, 어법에 맞도록 함을 원칙으로 한다.`라는 한글 맞춤법의 대원칙에 어긋나고 있다는 문제를 안고 있다. 본고는 이러한 문제가 발생하고 있는 원인을 표기사적 검토를 통해 규범적인 관점에서 제시하고자 하였다. 결국 부사 파생 접미사 `-이/-히`의 표기가 현재와 같은 문제를 안게 된 것은 규범의 개정 과정에서 전체의 맥락을 고려하지 않아서 발생한 의도하지 않은 오류라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 맞춤법 규정 제51항에 관한 논의는 최초의 규정에서 그러하였듯 맞춤법의 문제가 아닌 표준어의 문제로 돌아가서 이루어져야 한다.

This study discusses the article of the Korean Hangul suffix notation “-이[i]/-히[hi]” in terms of the overall viewpoint of Korean Hangul spelling. The spelling rule for the adverbial suffix “-이[i]/-히[hi]” is problematic in that it is not easy to determine the notation and that it goes against the principles of Hangul spelling. This paper aims to present the cause for these problems from a normative viewpoint by thoroughly reviewing the history of notation. It concludes that the problem posed by the adverbial suffix “-이[i]/-히[hi]” is an unintended error caused by not considering the whole context in the revision process of the norm. Therefore, it is a problem to be discussed in standard language and not a spelling problem, as was previously considered.
