"Deongsinbul" is a frame story that juxtaposes two stories. The two characters in the story are usually dualistically structuralized and analyzed. This study discussed the problems risen by this method of study to reinterpret the work. The speaker `I` is a Korean student soldier in the costumes of a Japanese soldier, but runs away from the army to ask a Chinese person for rescue. The blood letter written by this Homo Sacer that said `Buddha`s blessings` is the existential determination of a young intellect who lived during the time of colonization after desperate contemplation between life and death. The criticism that the speaker is a selfish person who solely sought to save his life regardless of the reality of colonialization was the result of comparing Manjeok and `I` within a frame. For the speaker, the Buddhist statue is idealized by the smile of Goddess of Mercy, but he is shocked by the life-sized Buddha. He observes Manjeok`s self-immolation and understands why the life-sized Buddha has to reflect human agony and sadness to accept it as Buddha. Great Priest Wonhye trusts the authenticity of the story how the speaker became a gardener and his blood letter. As he knows about Manjeol`s self-immolation, the two characters are perceived equally. "Deongsinbul" portrays the image of mankind that implies god and supports the form of life pursuing the enlightenment of ultimate truth.
