브라질 이민자 이규석(Nick Farewell)의 소설 『GO』는 준(準)자전적 소설이다. 이 소설은 주인공이 자신의 정체성을 『쿠비코바』라는 소설을 써가면서 찾아간다는 것이 특징이다. 따라서 작가 이규석과 주인공 `나`의 관계는 분리된 둘일 수 없다. 비록 소설적 대리인인 `나`를 통한 자기-쓰기로 완성한 『쿠비코바』이긴 하지만, `나`는 `이규석`과 한 몸이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 이 작품을 비평함에 있어 텍스트의 안(`나`)과 밖(이규석)을 심찰해야 하는 이유가 여기에 있다. <작기의 말>에서 이규석은 이 작품이 “정체성을 찾아가는 한 영웅의 현대적 우화”이며, “나 역시 정체성을 찾고 있다”고 명시적으로 밝히고 있다. 전기(傳記)는 기본적으로 한 작가의 고유한 `삶의 증험(證驗)`이라 했다. 이규석이 우리에게 선보인 『GO』 역시 자신의 삶의 증험이자, 삶을 문학적으로 완성한 결과물이다. 게다가 이 소설은 여느 전기소설처럼 `나`의 쓰기를 단지 자신이 겪은 실존적 고통, 부재, 결핍을 치유하는 수준에 그치지 않고 주위의 타자의 구원 문제를 그들과 함께-쓰기를 통해 시도한 점이 주목할 만하다. 사르트르의 용어를 빌자면, “쓴다는 것은 무엇인가?”라는 물음이 “누구를 위해 쓰는가?”의 물음, 즉 사회·문화적 차원으로까지 확대되고 있는 것이다. 자기구원을 이렇게 타자와 함께-쓰기를 통해 주어진 삶 속에서, 사회 속에서 찾는다는 것이 『GO』에서 제시된 이규석의 문학이자 철학이다. 따라서 작가를 배제하고 언어(기호)의 유희에서 비평의 새로운 길을 찾고 있는 바르트 류의 신비평은 최소한 『GO』의 분석에는 적합하지 않다는 것이 필자의 결론이다.

『GO』 is the quasi-autobiographical novel of Nick Farewell, who is an emigrant to Brazil. This novel has the feature that the main character seeks own identity by writing a novel, named 『Kubikova』. In this regard Nick Farewell, the main character `I`, and the author Lee Gyu-Seok, cannot be not separable two. Though 『Kubikova』 is a novel completed by self-writing of `I` as a novelistic representative, it is not too much to say that `I`, and Lee Kyu-Seok make one body. To review this novel, it is the reason to study the inside of the text(`I`) and outside of the text(Lee Kyu-Seok) point for point. In < Author`s comments >, Lee Kyu-Seok clearly stated his work as “a modern fable of a hero who finding identity”, and “I am also finding my identity”. The biography basically is the unique `testimony of life` of an author. He shows us 『GO』 as the testimony of own life and the literary completed output of his own life. Moreover this novel wouldn`t cease to use the writing of `I` to heal the own existential pain, absence, and deficiency like other biography, he attempts to deal with the problem of salvation of others by together-writing with them, which is the remarkable. If I may quote Sartre`s question, “what is the writing?”, has been enlarged to the question, “writing for whom?”, as sociocultural dimension. To find self salvation by together-writing with others in given life and society is the Lee Kyu-Seok`s literature and philosophy presented at 『GO』. Therefore, my conclusion is that the sort of Barthes`s the New Criticism that excludes an author and seeks the new way to criticize on the play of language(signifian) is, at least, not fit to analyse 『GO』.
