유토피아가 `사회적 유토피아`인 경우 유토피아는 교육과 밀접한 관련성을 지닌다. 유토피아주의자들은 고래로부터 사회적 유토피아를 창안할 때, 늘 교육이 필연적인 기능을 수행하도록 했다. 이에 본 연구는 유토피아가 가진 교육적 의미에 대하여 고찰해 보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 본 연구는 다음과 같은 세 가지 질문에 대한 대답을 구해 보고자 한다. 첫째, 과연 `교육`과 `유토피아`는 근원적으로 어떠한 연관성을 지니고 있는가? 둘째, `교육`이 `유토피아`와 연결됨에 있어서 `정치`의 문제는 어떠한 역할을 하는가? 셋째, `유토피아`를 이루기 위하여 `교육`이 나아가야 할 구체적인 방향과 단계는 어떠한 것들인가? 이 세 질문에 대하여 답을 구하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 다음과 같은 네 가지 연구 과제를 가지고 있다. 첫째, 유토피아가 그것의 의미사적인 측면에서 다루고자 한다. 둘째, 유토피아를 하나의 완벽한, 이상적인 사회상, 즉 `사회적 유토피아`라고 할 때, 그것이 지니고 있는 가장 기본적인 특징들에 대하여 서술하고자 한다. 셋째, 유토피아가 지니고 있는 긍정적인 측면과 부정적인 측면에 대한 논의가 이루어진다. 넷째, 유토피아가 교육과 맺고 있는 밀접한 관련성에 대하여 다룬다. 이와 같은 연구를 통하여 본 연구에서는 교육의 유토피아와의 관련성을 다음과 같은 세 가지 차원으로 정리할 수 있었다. 첫째, 유토피아가 `사회적 유토피아`, 특히 `구체적이고 상대적인 유토피아`의 의미로 파악되고, 교육, 교육학이 서양 교육사 속에서의 근대 이후로 우리가 알고 있는 의미로 제한되는 한, 유토피아와 교육은 태생적인 차원에서 깊은 관련성을 지닐 수밖에 없다. 둘째, 이처럼 교육과 유토피아가 그 태생을 같이 하고 있는 한, 교육은 유토피아 속에 포함되어 있는 정치적 차원이 가져올 수 있는 위험성들을 늘 함께 고려하여야 할 것이다. 셋째, 교육이 유토피아와 관련될 경우 가장 긍정적인 방향은 결국 유토피아가 그 어떠한 종류의 정치적 이데올로기나 민족 신화 등과도 관련되지 않은 상태에서 `구체적, 상대주의적 유토피아`의 성격을 지니는 경우에 한하여 가능해질 수 있다는 결론을 내릴 수 있다.

If utopia is a `social utopia`, utopia is closely related to education. When utopianists invented social utopias, they have always made education a necessary function. In this sense, this study aims to examine the educational meaning of utopia. To this end, this study attempts to answer the following three questions. First, what is the relationship between `education` and `utopia`? Second, what role does `politics` play in `education` connected to `utopia`? Third, what are the specific directions and steps for `education` in order to achieve `utopia` as educational objectives? In order to find answers to these three questions, this research has the following four research tasks. First, utopia is to be treated in terms of its semantic aspect. Second, I describe the most basic characteristics of utopia, when I refer to it as a perfect, ideal social image, `social utopia`. Third, the positive and negative aspects of utopia are discussed. Fourth, it deals with the close relation between utopia and education. In this study, we can summarize the relationship between education and utopia as the following three dimensions. First, education should play a role in maintaining the `status quo` as its optimal state in the already achieved utopian social order. Second, education can be a driving force to enable utopias that do not yet exist in the world. Third, among the structural characteristics of utopia, an important element related to education is the part of `Anticipation` contained in utopia. When utopia has the meaning of a social goal as a perfect goal, and thus includes all the processes of stepping toward such a goal, utopian thinking or action, these characteristics have much in common with the nature of education can do.
