본 논문에서는 한국도시지리학회지 창간 20년을 맞이하여 1998년~2016년 동안 게재된 461편의 학술 논문을 도시지리학의 하위 연구 분야별로 분류하여 연구주제에 대한 경향과 향후 과제에 대한 논의를 시도하였다. 지난 20년 동안 전통적인 연구 분야였던 도시체계와 도시구조 연구보다 도시응용 분야에서의 연구가 확대되고 도시 문화와 도시사회 분야의 논문 게재 수가 늘어나고 있는 추세를 보인다. 즉, 이론보다는 쟁점과 문제해결 지향적으로 연구 관심도가 변화하고 있음을 시사한다. 또한 도시지리학의 연구주제별로 핵심 연구자 집단이 일정 수준에서 확인되고 있다. 향후 도시지리학의 과제는 학술 연구의 양적 질적 확대와 연구 성과의 대중화, 심화연구와 연구범위 확대를 통한 한국적 도시지리 담론의 형성, 다양한 연구방법의 도입, 지속적이고 반복적 연구를 통한 종합적 도시지리 이론 마련, 사회적 현안 관련 연구 주제의 선도화, 이슈와 문제해결 지향적 연구와 순수학문 지향적 연구의 조화 등으로 제시할 수 있다.

This paper investigates research themes and issues of Korean urban geography by analyzing 461 articles published in the Journal of Korean Urban Geographical Society during 1998~2016. It attempts to discuss current research trends and future tasks. The result reveals the increasing number of papers in applied urban geography focusing upon urban cultural social themes and urban policies rather than traditional urban geographical themes such as urban system and urban structure, which also implies the shift of academic interests into issues and problem oriented urban geography from the pure-academic oriented one. The future tasks for Korean urban geographical society may include expansion of research both in volumes and quality to enhance public awareness, formation of Korean urban geographical discourse, vigorous search for various new research methodologies, establishment of urban theories to explain Korean urban phenomena, exploration of new research issues relevant to Korean society, and making a balance between academic interests and social practice for problem solving.
