본 연구는 젠트리피케이션 연구에서 중요한 논쟁의 대상이 되었던 이슈들을 고찰함으로써 젠트리피케이션 학자들이 논쟁을 통해 드러내고자 했던 도시 현상과 동학에 대한 근본적인 이해를 위해 아상블라주적 사유가 어떤 함의를 갖는지 고찰하였다. 도시 자체를 아상블라주로 보는 관점은 젠트리피케이션이 특정 형태의 도시성이 발현된 것으로 보고, 이러한 도시성이 만들어지는 복잡한 경합의 과정, 즉 제도와 기관, 정치, 물질적 환경, 문화, 경제의 다양한 부분들과 조각들이 관계를 통해 조합되고 탈조합, 재조합되는 과정에 주목하게 한다. 또한 이 관점은 최근 도시정책으로서 젠트리피케이션이 글로벌하게 이동하면서 지역의 맥락적 요소들과 복잡한 관계를 이루며 상이한 방식으로 발현되고 착근되는 방식을 탈영역화와 재영역화 과정의 관점에서 봄으로써 그 과정의 이동성, 관계성, 다중성, 우연성, 물질성을 파악하는데 유용하다.

By analysing key issues of the debates around gentrification, this paper explores the implications of assemblage thinking to fundamentally understand urban phenomena and their dynamics which gentrification scholars have sought to explain. Conceiving city as assemblages allows us to see gentrification as manifestation of a specific urbanism, focusing on the complex and contested process in which urbanism is made and achieved through assembling, disassembling, and reassembling of diverse parts and pieces of institutions, organizations, politics, material environment, culture and economy. It also contributes to grasping the mobility, relationality, multiplicity, contingency, and materiality of the processes of deterritorialization and reterritorialization when gentrification as urban policy travels globally and is differently concretized and embedded through complex relations with contextual elements of a specific place.
