본 연구는 인간의 성장을 위해 정서 수용이 중요하고 또한 정서를 억압하거나 회피하지 않고 수용하는 것이 심리적 성장에 중요하다는 가정에 기초하여, 정서와 성장관련 변인과의 관계에서 수용의 역할을 알아보았다. 이를 위해 심리적 성장을 성격성숙으로 개념화하고, 성인 307명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 정서인식명확성과 성격성숙의 관계에서 수용의 매개효과를 구조방정식모형을 통해 검증하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 정서를 명확하게 인식할수록 성격성숙의 수준도 높았다. 둘째, 수용은 정서인식명확성과 성격성숙 간의 관계에서 완전매개변인으로 기능하였다. 이는 인식된 정서가 잘 수용되는 과정을 통할 때 성격성숙이 촉진될 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 즉, 성격성숙 정도를 높이기 위해서 정서 인식을 명확히 하는 것뿐 아니라, 그것에 대한 수용을 잘 하도록 돕는 전략의 필요성을 제기하며, 마지막으로 연구의 의의와 제한점을 논의하였다.

This study examined the role of acceptance in the relationship between emotion and growth based on the assumption that emotional acceptance, which is a willingness to experience all emotions without suppressing or avoiding them, is important for personal and psychological growth. For this purpose, psychological growth was conceptualized by the maturity of character and the mediating effect of acceptance in the association between emotional clarity and maturation of character was investigated using structure equation model. The results of this study were as follows: First, emotional clarity had a significant positive correlation with maturation of character. Second, acceptance completely mediated the relationship between emotional clarity and maturation of character. This finding suggests that maturation of character can be promoted through the acceptance of perceived emotion. Therefore, we propose the need of therapeutic strategies that helping the client accept him or herself to elicit personal growth. Finally, implications and limitations of this study are discussed.
