이 연구의 목적은 국내에 정착하여 수년간 지속적으로 자원봉사활동에 참여하고 있는 북한이탈 주민을 대상으로 자원봉사 참여 동기를 분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 공동체의 자원봉사에 참여하고 있는 북한이탈주민 5명을 연구참여자로 선정하여 심층인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 연구결과로는 첫 번째, 자원봉사 초기에 나타나는 현상은 개인적 가치로 나타났는데, 일시적인 행동이 아니라 지속적으로 그 가치를 유지하고 있었고, 두 번째는 보상심리현상으로 보이는 자신이 받은 혜택을 지역사회로 환원하기, 세 번째는 일반 자원봉사 참여자에게 나타나지 않는 이타적 동기로서 가난한 사람에 대한 연대감이나 고통 받는 사람들과 동일시하는 경향을 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 북한에서 겪은 경험과 연계되어 `관심`과 `나눔`이라는 행위로 이어지게 한다는 것이다. 이 연구를 통해 북한이탈주민들이 현재의 정주지인 남한 사회에서 아무리 풍족하고 만족스러운 삶을 살아간다고 해도 북한에서 겪었던 경험으로 고통을 겪고 있는 사람들을 돕고자 하는 이타적 동기가 크게 작동된 것으로 해석된다. 이런 나눔의 행위는 통일 되는 그날까지 이어질 것으로 보이며, 통일된 한국사회에서 자신들이 해야 할 일이 무엇인지를 암묵적으로 시사해주고 있다.

The objective of this research is to analyze the motivational factors behind the participations based on the North Korean Defectors who have been participating on local volunteer services continually over several years. As for the research, five participators were selected from organizations who are participating on the volunteer service, and their in-depth interviews were conducted for the data collection and the analysis. As for the result, first, the initial phenomenon on the volunteer service appear as one`s personal values, and maintains as a continues value rather than being instantaneous. Second, their volunteer services are the services to the society as part of a “Compensation Mentality.” Third, there are tendencies of their solidarity with poor and equating them with people who are suffering. Such research result reveals a connection to their experiences from North Korea which naturally leads to the acts of “Interest and Sharing.”. Through this research, regardless of how satisfying or adequate their life may become, the North Korean Defectors` efforts in trying to help and share with the people who are suffering from the painful experiences from North Korea will continue through “the future unification.”
