오늘날 일본의 많은 중소기업들이 어려운 경영환경 하에서도 경쟁력을 유지하면서 글로벌 시장에서의 존재감을 유지해 나가는 주된 요인으로는, 무엇보다도 일본의 중소기업들이 보유하고 있는 핵심기술을 지속적으로 개발하면서, 시장에서 요구하는 제품을 생산할 수 있는 우수한 기술개발 능력들을 갖추고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구의 목적은 이러한 일본의 중소기업들이 보유하고 있는 기술 개발력의 원천은 무엇이며, 지속적으로 새로운 기술을 개발해 나가는 원동력이 어디에 있는 것인가를 파악하는 것이다. 본 연구를 통하여 우리는 일본 중소기업들의 기술 경쟁력의 원천은 어디까지나 대기업들과의 밀접한 하청관계를 통하여 얻어지게 되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 즉, 일본의 하청제도는 생산의 효율적인 분업만이 아니라 신제품이나 신기술 개발에 도움이 되는 정보 등을 모기업과 하청기업과의 사이에 공유함으로써 활력 있는 생산체제를 구축할 수가 있었던 것이다. 우리는 일본의 중소기업과 관련된 기술개발과 관련된 분석을 통해, 중소기업과 대기업과의 사이에 행해지고 있는 공생적인 기술개발, 또는 중소기업들이 틈새시장의 전문화된 핵심기술을 개발하여 그것을 제품의 생산과정에 응용하고 있는 방법 등은 향후 우리나라의 중소기업들이 글로벌 시장에서 경쟁력을 더욱 강화해 나가는 데 있어서 매우 유용한 시사점이 될 것이다.

Many Japanese SMBs are maintaing their global competitive advantages in this tough situations and this is considered to be stems from their strong market sensing and core technology developing capabilities. This study tried to figure out sources of sustanable technology developing capabilites of Japanese SMBs. The results of this reseach suggests the sources of sustanable technology developing capabilites of Japanese SMBs are healty cooperative relationships with their bigger partnering companies. Japanese subcontracting practices are functioning as not just an efficient devision of labor system but also a knowhow sharing system for new product/technology development. The symbiotic relationships between Japanese SMBs and theig bigger partnering compaies shows imprtant implications for Korean SMBs searching for a breakthrough for global competitive presense.
